3 Marriott points equals 1 Starwood point. The transfer also takes a minimum of five business days.
3:1 was/is a fair value of what Marriott points are worth compared to Starwood. That in itself doesn't make it a terrible redemption IMO.
Also, the transfer for me was instant. I had a few thousand Marriott points that I transferred as they were going to expire. Used them at Tambo Del Inka.

I think it's safe to say he isn't choosing to live in a shite hole. I would imagine it's avoiding 4,000 SQ foot houses for a family of four.
OP: Points and good jobs. My wife has less time off working up the career professional ladder. Myself? I use every damn day of PTO they offer and don't really GAF what people think of it. I do however make sure I'm not leaving at a bad time and coordinate with others. Thankfully, any job I've had has fully supported taking our days in full.
We'll see if kids change that but as of now we're still planning trips for 2019 and 2020 that would occur while we have our future kid(s). It's a huge priority to me. I read TD, personal finance and travel almost exclusively.

Yeah this makes. Sense I was just thinking he was talking about renting a crappy house so he could travel more.

You have vacations days you take vacation days. No shame in that.

Like others, I have multiple kids but we prioritize travel. We also have great grandparents who allow my wife and I to travel on extended trips. Since I travel for work, I have tons of Chase points, Southwest points, United points, Marriott points etc. that basically give us a couple of free international trips each year. Headings to Belgium in 2018, business class each way, for free!

When I had no kids, I was able to keep my imprint small and had extra money to travel. As my family grows, it gets harder to travel as much, especially with kids.
I hope to be able to travel with kids as much as possible when they are of suitable age.

If I had a wife and kids I certainly wouldn't be able to travel as much. Much easier to buy one plane ticket than five. I am in my 40's and have worked for the same company for 20 years, so I have a healthy income. I have no debt other than my house, and my mortgage payment is less than $1,000 / month. My girlfriend travels constantly for her job, so we have free hotel rooms with her rewards. I travel so much because I like it and it's where I choose to spend my money. However - there's no way I could travel as much with a wife and kids. Those kids grow up fast - you will have an empty nest before you know it. When you do - get out and see the world. I haven't regretted spending money on any trip I have taken. I do love to travel, the money I spend on it is well worth it to me.

Married, kids, and career. We didn’t travel much because of the same reasons most people don’t, “it’s too hard with kids”, “timing isn’t right”, “it’s too expensive.” While all of those reasons are legitimate, it you make it a priority and plan well, you can make it happen.
My advice is to don’t worry about having a perfect trip and just enjoy the process.

Honestly I travel for work so I earn a shite ton of miles and points. I also have a Delta credit card and we spend way too fricking much money. But... vacations are basically paid for because of it.

I make a modest living but with 3 kids it hinders my travels.
As a middle class American, I estimate that it costs about $500/month for each kid if you consider insurance, college savings, sports/activities, fun things like movies or going to a state park, extracurricular education, food, clothes, etc. More if they're in daycare.
You have 3 kids. Maybe you do some hand-me-downs or whatever to save on the younger kids, but they're still expensive and add a significant hit to your budget.
Imagine what you'd do with an extra $1500 a month.

No kids, and the GF and I prioritize travel in our budget..
2017 was a good year since I had 13 paid weeks off, as opposed to my normal 5... Still didn't do all I wanted to due to GF not having all that time off..

Everyone just chooses to spend their disposable income differently. We don't live in a super huge house or drive luxury vehicles, so we are able to afford a handful of fun vacations every year.
We do invest time in finding good deals and staying in small boutique hotels. We try to immerse ourselves into the culture in the country we visit as opposed to just staying at an all-inclusive resort and not experiencing the local people and food
Could not have said it better. Some people choose to spend money on possessions, I choose to spend it on experiences.
And bear in mind, there is a significant difference between "travel" and "vacation."

We would rather spend our money on travel and experiences rather than a big house or a $850 per month Range Rover lease.

I prioritize travel every year and the only limitation is time I can get off work.
Internationally, I did SE Asia and Portugal this year. Next year, I plan to do Japan and Eastern Europe.
One goal once I am done with my graduate degree is to travel a lot domestically. I have a list of about 12 cities or destinations I want to visit in the next 18 months.
I also travel cheaply by staying at hostels. My entire 11 day trip to Portugal was $1,200 all in and I didn’t watch my spending at all once there.

How the hell do yall travel so much? All single, older?
I travel for work. I do a few international flights a a plenty of domestic flights a year.
I get plenty of miles and points that I use to travel with my wife. No kids yet.

Air Asia has flights from Kuala Lumpur to Bali for 20$ one way. So round trip with add ons will be like $60

Yes being single with no kids helps a ton.
As far as expense though, I think many people are just uninformed on how cheap traveling can be, whether that's not putting in the work to find good deals, or not knowing where to look.
Also, utilizing credit card points is such a huge benefit, that if you have decent credit and you aren't accumulating points in some manner you're just throwing away money. It's the difference between me taking huge international trips and not.
For instance, I was explaining my CC point strategy with my family one day and my sister (who loves to travel btw) was all like "I don't have time for all that". I was like, you don't have time to simply apply for a good CC, put all your expenses on it, and go on an epic trip across the world for almost free? Suit yourself
My friends always ask me how I go on these trips. How much money I make? I make a modest income for a single person, I just mange my money well and take full advantage of CC points.
