Everyone just chooses to spend their disposable income differently. We don't live in a super huge house or drive luxury vehicles, so we are able to afford a handful of fun vacations every year.

We do invest time in finding good deals and staying in small boutique hotels. We try to immerse ourselves into the culture in the country we visit as opposed to just staying at an all-inclusive resort and not experiencing the local people and food

Don't get me wrong we travel, but some of these places would eat up my annual travel budget.

So you think people who are posting on a travel board, many of who are providing pictures and reports, are full of shite?

Traveling to very distant destinations often for work (on a single airline, etc) allows for a lot more frequent/affordable personal travel.

I travel for work and can swing two or three trips a year just on the points earned from my work travel. Add in my credit card spends, and a few bump vouchers, and we’re good for a few trips a year.

I just assume 90% of this board has a 100k travel budget per year, the huge bulk of which bizarrely goes to repeated trips to Disney

No kids, work according to the academic calendar, self employed spouse....plus prioritizing travel over a fancy ride, bigger house, or things like jewelry or personal care (those mani/pedi/hair dye/highlights seriously add up over time). With what some ppl spend on a watch, I can travel for a couple years.

You can also travel with an eye toward thrift, prioritizing experiences and sights over luxury hotel rooms, expensive flights, and traveling in peak seasons.

I am very lucky that I work for a European company in Germany, so I have 6 weeks vacation and a decent income from being an expat. I also have 3 kids, but my wife and I have learned some valuable lesson about travel with kids that makes it work (they've been to 18 countries in the past~4 years).
On top of that, my job is global in nature, so I get several international trips per year.

When we return to the states, we hope to keep this travel mindset alive and take our kids throughout the US. Long weekends at new cities and stuff like that.

My living is pretty modest, too. However...

1. I am single with no kids.

2. I travel solo and don't have to worry about anyone else approving of the hotel (usually budget places), restaurants (usually McDonald's), and I can do what I want to do as fast or slow as I want to do it.

3. I have seven weeks off spread throughout the year.

4. I am patient and do a lot of long term planning and searching for good deals.

5. Traveling is a priority. I sacrifice quite a bit to be able to travel because I love it.

Honestly if it weren’t for credit card points no way I could afford to travel the way I do with my income. Having a significant other that is into the points game as well is huge so we can both pay our way. I’ve done Sedona, San Fran and Peru(here now) for the last three New Years eves for at least 5 days almost exclusively on points for flights, tours and room. Puerto Rico for July fourth in 2016 as well because I liked it best of Southwest’s one ways(companion pass). Probably forgetting of one other “big” trip. Airbnb also has some great properties for good prices.
Other small weekend trips like Buffalo(saints), DC, golf trips etc.

Going off topic, but recently unemployed so I started looking into expat opportunities and can’t get shite being young with little experience. All I want to do is gain global experience while also being able to travel the world, is that too much to ask for?

It seems when I was looking about teaching overseas every site wanted me to pay a fee in order to be considered. A couple I did pay and did the application process only to not hear shite from them.

The government website for people looking for employment out of state sucks as well and is a pain to navigate

My kids are grown so that expense is (mostly) gone.

I use miles for most of my flights. I put all of my companies purchasing on a credit card so I accumulate a lot of miles and points. We have a group of ten that are all pretty comfortable financially and enjoy traveling with each other which makes traveling even more enjoyable. No one in the group is needy so if we're at a destination and a couple or a smaller group wants to splinter off and do their own thing for a day or two no one is offended. The group has trips scheduled to Isla Mujeres, St. John and Italy this year.

I'm not married / don't have kids, travel once or twice each month for work, and my girlfriend + I don't do much traveling outside the country. Easy to get to a lot of places in the continental U.S. with time and miles.
