How easy is it change a flight time?

I have an event I go to next weekend and the end time is determined by factors outside my contro which could vary several hours. I am looking at an afternoon flight but they have some later ones. Is it better to book the earlier flight and then change to later if needed or vice versa?

Call the airport and let them know you are running a bit late. Make sure they know know you have a ticket already.

Depends on your ticket. Ranges from a click of a button to complicated

What would be the option to make it the easiest? American and Delta appear to both be options.

Depends on the airline. Ranges from free changes anytime to same day free changes to changes anytime before the same day but you pay the fare difference.
One good thing to come out of Covid was airlines adopted way more passenger friendly change rules. It was a bitch changing flights before Covid and during it so they finally realized maybe we should make this easier.

Depends if they have seats or not.
If they do, and you don’t have status, expect to pay a change fee and the cost difference of fares. Some airlines (Southwest) are easier than legacy carriers (United, Delta, American).
Fee is based on ticket type and fare class.
As far as how easy it actually is - in almost every case you can do it via the app or online, or by simply calling the customer service number.

You obviously don’t have status with either one, so it is going to cost you to change same day unless you go standby.
Your best bet is to purchase the later flight and do not get the “basic” fair. On Delta, get the main ticket. Then on that day, use the app to request a change to the earlier flight when you know you can make it. If enough seats are available, you can usually change to the flight for $75, or you can go standby for free, but not guaranteed the change. Not sure the fee on American for guaranteed change, but their standby is free as well

Act like a man. Schedule the flight that you think is going to work.
If the event host lets things run over, etc., just let someone at your table/group know you have a hard out at XXXX, and leave. I've watched this happen thousands of times, and done it myself plenty.
And if it's a wedding, just say your flight was canceled, and don't go at all.
ETA: You seem like an inexperienced traveler, which is fine. Your flight is connecting somewhere, and you'll need seats on both flights to change it successfully and not get stuck sleeping in an airport (Charlotte or ATL probably). Don't play with fire.

Book last flight and then go standby for free earlier if you can make it to the airport. What's the route?

Thanks Lemmy, it's the crack of dawn to me, no coffee yet
Yeah I'd probably book last flight of the day on Delta to what I'm assuming is Atlanta and then go standby earlier on any of the ATL/MEM flights. American has gotten weird with their standby that you have to request it on the app, gate agents won't put you on the list anymore

The good news is that it is very easy to do on the airline's mobile app. The bad news is that it's gonna cost you whatever extra fees the airline wants to apply.

Depends on the airline, and type of ticket you buy. Always download the app for the airline, as changes through the app are often much easier.

The virtues of cold brew, you can get it much faster out of the fridge. For bonus points, don't dilute it (I didn't on accident) and wonder why you're still awake at 0100 the next night.

This is what I would do.
Probably goes without saying but both flights need to be the same airline

I booked the afternoon flight and will try to get later if needed. I see that some are saying that is the wrong choice, but I have to get back and would be in a tougher position vice versa.
Greensboro - Charlotte - Memphis.
I am coaching my guys at the national championship in Greensboro and my college team has a meet I have to be back at Delta State for Sunday morning. Just didn't want to have my guys coach-less for the last session if they made it that far, but the uncertainty is so hard.
I appreciate your help!
