A fire in an electrical.Substation has cut power to the entire area. I can't belive they don't have backup power for such an important asset, and British media is questioning why there isn't alternative connections to secondary grid supplies. Flights from the US have already turned around. They are saying Heathrow won't open until maybe tomorrow....UK tomorrow.

Some flights are being diverted to Manchester, Shannon, CDG and Schipol but agents won't be available to process arrivals for several hours. Sounds like a nightmare if you are on one of those planes. If you are connecting on to some other destination, well, good luck.

How the hell is that even possible that they don't have some sort of backup generators?

At some point, nearly all power has a single point of failure. In a data center, you may have a generator, but if the switching equipment goes, neither power source is available.

But let's all laugh at LHR. Anyone that connects there is retarded if they have any other options. I wonder how the bathrooms in Terminal E are doing now that all those people in the concourse had to re-clear inbound immigration to re-enter the UK to leave tomorrow.

I have toured manufacturing facilities that have redundant power feeds from different substations. That seems like a huge oversight.

I've worked on the design team of new office buildings that had redundant power. I think it's pretty standard for Class A office buildings.

The comments on their FB thread are funny in a BA depressing sort of way.

You lost my luggage on a flight to Nashville two years ago, isit alright if I come the Heathrow today to see if you've found it yet?

Another:

We diverted to Madrid. All 500 passengers got off on this flight 206, but all our luggage will remain on the aircraft and return to London without us, when ever it returns."
