I am heading to L.A. in a little bit here and staying in the heart of Santa Monica. I'll have a little under a week to play with. Off the top of my head, I'd like to see Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Malibu and make my way down the coast to Newport Beach and Laguna. I might try to make it to Pasadena to catch a glimpse of the Rose Bowl, and I am very interested in some excellent korean bbq.

Anyone have a list of restaurants and bars/venues that are worth putting on the list as I pass through these areas? Appreciate it guys!

Granted it’s not totally out of the way, Monkish, Smog City, etc. are opposite direction from Santa Monica, which could be costly at the wrong time of day, especially since Monkish doesn’t open until 4pm during the week. Good spots, though.

We went to El Matador Beach in Malibu at low tide and enjoyed the scenery, caves, etc. I liked driving along Mulholland Drive with all of the houses on cliffs and scenic lookouts over the city. The hike to the Hollywood Sign was also scenic on a clear day. Warner Brothers Studio tour was pretty cool too. I wish I could have seen one of the show recordings when we were there.

Check out the Westside Comedy Cub. We saw the Improv show and it was very entertaining. Some of the opening acts were bad but overall it was really a fun night.

They used to give tickets to tapings outside of the Chinese theater. The really popular TV shows are given out weeks ahead of time. You could get stuff like game shows, talk shows, etc.

I have relatives in Southern California and get out there occasionally. I saw a taping of "Joey" in 2006. It was actually one of the cooler things I've experienced. The only bad thing was that the show got cancelled shortly after that and the episode never aired.

Try the Driftwood Kitchen in Laguna Beach and The Deck on Laguna Beach right next door for drinks while waiting. Sunset is good time for this.

The Saloon on PCH for a nightcap is a good place to go after your dinner.

I don't know about excellent but for a great value($20-30), Gen Korean BBQ House is pretty solid for an all you can eat place, bring your appetite because you'll need it for all the meats you'll consume. Only downside to this place is that you have to cook your own meats with the grill built into the table. Check out there webpage here. Gen BBQ.

Just returned from the Anaheim area and ate at the Crab Cooker in Newport Beach. Great little joint with fresh seafood. Place is not fancy, located about a block from the beach and most items are grilled, not fried. Scallops were incredible.

Why not Korean bbq? That’s one of my absolute favorite meals

You need to check out Korea town for sure to get some bbq. I know a really good jimjilbang (Korean spa) that you can spend the day at for $25. It’s called the Wi Spa. I’ve been meaning to make a post about it
