We went many years ago. Four islands, four nights on each. Used Aloha and Hawaiian airline to jump between islands. Maui and Kauai were probably our favorites, but Hawaii was good too and the beaches of Oahu were worth the time, especially along the east coast. Of course, things have changed over the years with development and crowds.

Someone mentioned Mama’s Fish House in Paia on Maui. The food and setting are incredible.

I've done all four islands.
I did them in this order: (1) Maui (2) Kauai (3) Oahu (4) Big Island.
Maybe I'm biased, but that's the exact order I would recommend other travelers use. With only 8 or 9 days, I would stick to two islands. No more. And I would do Maui then Kauai as mentioned before. A slight caveat in that I haven't been to Maui since the devastating fires so I don't know what the vibe is like there now.

Interested in which resort on Maui you consider better than the Four Seasons on Lanai, and for that matter the Auberge resort on the Big Island.

Not saying any resort on Maui is the best on the islands but the number of high quality resorts on Maui make it a go and stay at resort kind
of island. Lots of beautiful resorts on beautiful beaches from Wailea to Kaanapali all the way up to Kapalua. All I was trying to do is give differences in all the islands. They are all all different in there own unique ways

The Norwegian cruise line Pride of America slowly cruises the entire Napoli coast on Friday afternoon prior to its return to Honolulu.

Kauai is the best island
If you only do Hawaii once that’s my suggestion. No harm in doing 2 islands in a trip… Maui and Kauai is a good combo.

Agree that Kauai is hands down the best.
Fly into Honolulu and go see Pearl Harbor. Then hop over to Kauai.

Good to see all the Kauai love - kind of, as I would like it to stay like it is.
I will add a more nuanced note. If you're wanting to stay in a resort and have that kind of Hawaii trip, I would recommend Maui as they have the best resort district. Kauai is for the person who wants to experience the theatrical Hawaii we see from afar, and is best experienced through Air BNB/Vacation rentals and rental cars. With the caveat that if you have the change to spare for 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay, by all means do that. That is next level.
