Guaranteed way to keep TSA from cutting locks off checked baggage?

My son just moved to Hawaii for work and I'm sending him a rolling footlocker via a co-worker who is flying down for vacation in a couple days.

The locker has some video game consoles, other electronics, clothes, etc. that he wasn't able to take with him on his initial trip. It has two latches to keep it closed, but I would like to put a pad lock on it so some piece of shite TSA employee doesn't steal anything.

Any tips on how to keep them from just cutting the lock to see what is inside?

Have your co-worker put it in a carry-on. TSA can check any bag they want.

If they decide to search it and can’t get in, the locker won’t be going to Hawaii.

OP your heart is in the right place, but use your head. Would you want them to load someone else’s footlocker on to your plane without knowing what’s inside it? Kinda defeats the purpose of bay security don’t you think?

Ship the consoles via USPS or FedEx. If you put any lock on the thing that is not openable by TSA (there is a little red and white logo on compliant locks) they will cut it off.

A good TSA-compliant padlock for trunks is Master Lock 4688D. Be sure none of the devices have a lithium battery in them.

Is them walking off with stuff a thing? Never heard of it happening.

Just Google'd it and apparently TSA has master keys to open locks like this so while the possibillity of them stealing something from it still exists, at least I can lock it. Thanks.

I've had watches, shoes and clothing taken out of my suitcase before.

He was being sarcastic.

But one way to make sure nothing gets stolen and the bag doesn't get lost is to check a firearm in it.

Every time we check luggage my wife snaps on her TSA-compliant lock while I just zip up my unlocked bag and forget it. My thinking is that whole bag theft is as likely if not more likely than having something taken from the bag. I put nothing of value in a checked bag.

If you are still concerned, see if the airline offers extra luggage insurance or buy separate travel insurance with such coverage. I think the airline's limit of liability for luggage is $3800.

Going via FedEx with an itemized list of contents and a declared value would assure coverage if lost, but is expensive.

Your clothes must be a lot nicer than mine.

Didn't know people put locks on suitcases. I've never locked a TSA checked bag or had anything stolen from one.

Is putting an air tag on expensive items an option?

Bought two TSA approved locks for checking firearms on a flight. Had no issues opening up the case in SeaTac for TSA

Had them open up a checked bow that was 3 weeks old and some TSA bad arse dry fired it and tore it to hell. My only consultation was imagining that the dumbass probably got blistered pretty good. Luckily it only needed one cam and new string.
