She and her husband and adult son (who lives in another state) all flew to GC after going through multiple months of jumping through covid hoops, getting extra insurance and in general doing everything RIGHT for a trip they routinely made 2 or 3x every year until the last 2 years of covidgadden (friend's sister has a house there).

So one of the requirements apparently is freaking daily testing while there along with all these tests they had to take here in the US right up until the plane actually was in the air. Sounded horrible. They were also first in line for vaccine when it came out; took all boosters, double/tripled masked..the whole covid koolaid drinking.

So one person in their group (the grown son who flew in from another state) tested positive and the authorities slapped felon bracelets on everyone that was in the vicinity (about 20 people), gave them a shitty android phone that would go off if they attempted to go outside and they spent a miserable 2 weeks at a house *ON THE frickING BEACH* without being able to go outside once to stick their feet in the sand or dip them in the water.

They had to have all food & alcohol delivered and ran up a several thousand dollar alcohol bill from the local market.

In the end as they were getting ready to board the plane to come back the country relaxed the rules to where they COULD have gone to the beach but it was too late for them.

This really soured me on wanting to travel anywhere. She said the people that were in the area (i think it was restaurant or something) were all pissed as hell too for getting caught in the 'positive result!' net. Everyone got to be miserable.

Kicker - not a single person displayed any symptoms including the guy who tested positive.

I'd edit this to say international or anywhere with COVID testing as a requirement. Just got back into the US of A and will not be leaving this country to go anywhere anytime soon. All domestic for the foreseeable future. I'll post a review in the ski thread later tonight

Check kayak.com. There are countries that aren’t strict on requirements.

I had my own Covid travel nightmare over Christmas and new year’s. Locked down in London.

If you want to travel, this is the new reality. It’s off the chain right now with omicron being exponentially more infectious. I think once omicron burns out, we’ll be back to the new normal. Meaning required vaccination and testing but little risk of quarantine.

Well, they did choose to go to a country that had those ridiculous restrictions in place. They knew the risk.

There are other islands in the Caribbean that are much more open than the Caymans. The Caymans will never go back to being a tourist destination again.

If the rules were clear, they took a calculated risk by going ans knowing the possibilities.

Our 20th anniversary is this year, and it was supposed to be a three week multi-country adventure on the Mediterranean coast. That’s a big nope now. Few days somewhere nice here in the states and hope for 25.

Sorry about your friends but glad their nightmare is over. We took trip to St Martin for New Years. Also took ferry to St Barts for the day. Just traveling via ferry to St Barts was complicated. Everywhere we checked, no test was required to travel by boat as long as your vaccinated and boosted. But as we were going thru customs in St Barts, an officer asked for our Covid test. We didn’t have one so it was tense for a few but they let us in anyway. Testing to return home was also stressful. We will stay in USA the remainder of 2022.

Don’t know. We spent last weekend around Anna Maria Island and it was very nice. Flying there to chill may be nice. Without flying though…we looked at some honeymoon cottages in Seaside, but a week is a bit much for that. Just depends, something low key…we’ve really dialed it back which is unfortunate. 5 year we did a week in SF, 10th we did 18 days all over France, skipped 15 for 20…now this.

We’ve done Atlanta, Orlando, and Bradenton every other weekend back to back to back…so we’re a bit pooped on driving for a bit. We need to figure it out though so we can book.

Oh well, it’s set…booked a room for 4 nights at the Pearl in Rosemary.

I think your friends are lying. Cayman has required testing on days 2, 5 and 10 of a stay. What's more, this requirement has been in place since at least December 16, 2021.

Yeah, it's dumb, but frankly, I would not have travelled to a place that was that restrictive.

Could they not just leave the phone inside and then go to the beach?

Sucks for your good friends but everyone knows that the Caymans have insane restrictions right now.

And someone who travels there as much as they did before COVID, should especially know this.
