My significant other and I are going to Mexico early April and have narrowed it down to a few all inclusive resorts. Which one would you recommend?
- Grand Bahía Príncipe Coba
- Hotel Riu Caribe
- Riu Palace Costa Mujeres
- Iberostar Paraiso Beach
- Hotel Grand Sunset Princess
- Grand Bahia Principe Tulum
- Iberostar Quetzal

Excellence is currently running up to 60% off with a COVID test on-site for return at most of their resorts in Mexico, Jamaica and Dominican Republic.
Stayed at Beloved Playa Mujeres for part of our honeymoon awhile back. Highly recommend if it’s in your budget.

I went to the Iberostar Quetzal/Tucan in October 2019. It’s a pretty cool little resort. It has an awesome beach, service was great, food was meh, just okay, but I never went hungry.
There’s a cool jungle in the center of the property between the lobbies and the pool. It has a population of howler monkeys that roam the trees and the balconies. It’s nice that it’s in Playacar which is gated. It’s a 3-4 min cab ride into Playa which is cool to explore.
It fit the bill for what I went for. Escorted three ladies down for their 40 bday celebrations. I’d consider going back for sure. I like the smaller feel not the mega resort you have to take a tram everywhere.
ETA: I was at the Bahia Principe Grand Akumal in February 2020. If you go this route, do the Akumal or Sian Kahn. Sian Kahn is across the highway from the actual beach. If you stay at the Coba, or Tulum, you’ll be limited on where you can go and do on the property. The former properties you can eat/drink/use facilities of all four properties. They will run you off if you have the wrong color wrist band on and wander onto the Grand’s beach or pools. They’ll even refuse service at the beach bars.
The food was pretty good there. It’s a haul from the airport, about a hour and a half ride. Beaches are man made behind jetties and pretty rocky.
I’d stay away from the Princess for sure. We ended up having to share a ride when we went to Akumal and had to drop some people off there, just the outside was not inviting.
I’d recommend the Quetzal. The more I think about it, probably my favorite AI I’ve been to in that area. I just looked up pricing on Travelocity. The Akumal is only 50.00/pp more than the Tulum (well worth it not to be a wristband second class citizen), and 150.00 less than Tucan/Quetzal. 695.00 for 5 nights and flights is a heck of a deal for Grand Bahia Akumal.

We’ve done Excellence before and it was great. We are going to Mexico this year and staying at Unico. We got a really good price so decided to try it out.

Be careful if you visit the capital Mexico City. Have your life insurance polices in a location easy to find by your beneficiaries. I knew somebody who was staying in a hotel in a "safe" area of the city. He went out in the early evening for a short walk to buy cigarettes. He was stabbed and killed a few steps from the hotel entrance. I have no desire to visit Mexico or any country in South America. Wishing you safe traveling.

Iberostar Quetzal hands down. Been to Playa over 50 times and to this resort at least a dozen. Great beach, food and service is good. Naturally beautiful setting and your very close to town. Get a massage in the jungle by the waterfall.

Are the discounted prices advertised on the site? Right now we are finding $550-$600 a night with a 3 night minimum? Does that price sound right?

Booked the Principe Tulum before this was posted. Sounds like I will still have fun.
Did you do any excursions?

Sorry about the person you knew, but going to a resort in Cancun is about as safe as it gets. Mexico City unfortunately is a very different story.
