I grew up there but I have lived there in 15 years. I go there at least twice a year but that’s to see family. I don’t ever get to go do anything. My wife and I are going for about a week. We are already planning to do the following:
Sloss Furnace
Botanical Gardens
Vulcan
Oak Mountain
Kayaking the Cahaba.
Is there anything else we should do and what about good places to eat? We like farm to table or just locally owned places.

Places to eat:
1) Chez Fon Fon for dinner. Get the trout or hanger steak. They’re absolutely amazing.
2) Gianmarcos is very good Italian with a great wine list. You’ll need reservations or get there early and sit at their nice wine bar area.
There are other great places to eat but those are probably my 2 favorite.

-Chez FonFon was mentioned and I second that.
-OvenBird is pretty good.
-For pizza I recommend Post Office Pies (traditional pizza) or Slice (more of a variety of toppings).
-For BBQ I would highly recommend Saw’s (there are multiple locations that each have a unique menu so I would check them beforehand) and also the new Rodney Scott’s BBQ (just be warned they a authentic Carolina style place so their sauce is basically apple cider vinegar and pepper).
For Mexican food, you can’t be El Barrio and I would put Rojo second in this category, but still really good.
Birmingham has really developed a strong food scene. There are plenty more options out there, these are just my go-to’s. Is there a kind of food you are wanting to try or prefer?

Make sure to go on the Urban Safari and drive thru Ensley.

I’ve been through there. My dad owns rental houses in Ensley.

Thank you guys.
There is nothing specific we’re looking for. We just like to try new places.

Eat at The Cowfish at the Summit. Burgushi and it is better than your imagination can conjure up if you haven't experienced it.

It's not bad if you're stuck at The Summit, but there are dozens of places in town much, much better.

Plenty of good breweries: Good People, Trim Tab, Avondale, Cahaba.
You can go to Barons game if they are playing - Good People Brewing is right by their stadium.
For restaurants, J.Clyde is a really good bar/pub with a great burger. Saws for bbq, For nicer food, Highlands, Chez Fonfon, Hot and Hot Fish Club, Galley Garden, Gianmarco's.

If the Barons are in town that week, I'd put a game at the top of my list. Make sure to stay through the 7th inning: Children's Hospital. I cry like a little girl seeing those poor sick kids watching the game from the hospital windows.
Tortugas Pizza and Good People Brewing are across the street from the Regions Park. Tortugas is Chicago style pizza so order before you get there or plan on drinking beer for a while waiting. It takes a good 30 mins to get your pizza.
Chez FonFon and Highlands get a lot of love here. Neither are personal favorites for me. The wife and I completed a nice night downtown walking from the rooftop bar at the Elyton, across the street to Cafe Dupont for dinner, and then up the street to wrap it up at the Atomic Bar.
Check the schedule for the Alabama Theatre. Watching a classic movie there is an experience and you can check out Pizitz Foodhall either before or after.
McWayne Center is a great place if you have kids.
Put your name on the waiting list at El Bario and walk down to the Collins bar to drink while you wait. That's fun.
Birmingham Civil Rights museum if you are into history.
The Cahaba can be a lot of fun. If you are in the Cahaba Heights area of the river, make sure you hit either Martin's or Ms Myra's BBQ. Both are top notch, but I give the nod to Martin's due to them having a bar.
I've lived here all my life. This town has dramatically changed in the last ten years. It's really hard to describe how far it's come. The food scene here is fantastic.

No kidding. I would add:
- tomato salad is back on the menu at Hot n Hot.
- Red Mtn Park has a fair among going on.
- studio classes at the art museum.
- Brat Brot.
- pedal tour is a good way to hit up 3-4 breweries.
- Gip’s Place.
- live music at the Nick, Saturn and Iron City.
- symphony in the park is coming up.
- Johnny’s meat and three in homewood.
- duckpin bowling at the Woolworth.

Got to play in a round robin here in high school. Was such a cool experience.

We rented it out for a Corp function once. Pretty cool. I try to make the classic every year. Probably end up going one in three. Out of town this year.
Another thing I’m not sure was meniotned was Barbour. Incredible motorcycle museum. The track/park is worth checking out if there is any racing goin on. It is also home of the official US driving school of Porsche. It’s expensive and I’ve never done it. But from everything I hear, it is a once in a life opportunity to drive on a world class road course.
And tons of good golf. I’m always amazed at how many people travel here to play the RTJ trail. And Shoal is incredible if you can find someone to take you out for a round.

I worked part time at BassPro Shops a while back. I met people from all over the world who had just stopped by on their way to Barber. It is truly a world class museum if you're into motorcycles and cars.

I have a cousin that lives in Wisconsin that races motorcycles and he raves about Barber. He never misses the opportunity to race there.

My two favorite restaurants are Ovenbird and Whistling Table. Check out Fig Tree for brunch. Pedal tour is a ton of fun, or can even rent a Zyp bike and ride around the city. We now have a top golf, which isn't unique but a good time. Even have a Dave and Busters down in Hoover.

We are big Fig Tree fans. I haven't been to Ovenbird yet, but I hear good things about it.
