Flying United in a couple days & curious how one gets on the upgrade request monitors at the gate? Looked online today but couldn’t find a button on my reservation as it alludes to online. Used miles to bump up to 1st class in the past & would like to use miles to try & upgrade but wasn’t sure how to go about doing it.

Depends on your frequent flyer status with the airline.

this and also the type of fare you purchased.

Call the airline and ask.

Silver, Gold, Platinum and 1k all get CPU's (complimentary premier upgrades). Just having the status puts you on the list. Each level clears at different times - 1K is like 48 hours out, Silver is basically right before the flight.

Using miles to request an upgrade is different, you get priority over the complimentary upgrades except for Global Services.

Recently, when I booked my trip on United they offered an upgrade to First from Houston to Denver for $119, so I bought it. It really was nice. But, I'm stuck in coach on the way home

The monitors you see at the gate are people who have status with the airline waiting on a complimentary upgrade if seats are available.

They also typically have a standby section, that would be people who don't have a ticket on the flight but if seats are available they will be allowed to board.

Delta has started to include the basic economy seats on that standby list. Usually after check-in I'll notice the standby list is about 20-25 deep when there's really only a few people on standby. Not sure if united is doing the same

To the OP, call United's 800 number and ask how many miles + $$ it would take to upgrade. Also you can check in the app, United has a very good app that will let you upgrade/pay for the more legroom seats cheaper. I have also gotten good deals (paying with cash) during check-in to upgrade to 1st

Yeah but the problem with those basic economy seat is that even if you have medallion status and there are first class seats available, they typically won't upgrade you.

Oh that's definitely true, I was just going off on a tangent in reference to the OP's question

Compare United's app to American's app and it's night and day, would consider Delta's app middle of the pack. If United had more legroom or powerports for their economy seats, I'd probably fly them more often

MSY is still a pretty good spot to score CPU's on United. Doubt there are a lot of GS or 1K here.

As a Platinum, I get upgrades just about every flight out of LFT when it's an E170, most of the time out of MSY, and every so often out of ORD. IAH and DEN though, fughettaboutit.

Called customer service & you can’t use points to upgrade to economy plus, only business class. Went ahead & paid for the economy plus seats.
