I'm going on a 2 week road trip vacation that will include staying 3 nights in west Yellowstone and 3 nights in Jackson hole. My son, 15, asked if we could find a place to fish. No boat, just bank fishing in a creek or lake, for any species of fish. He just wants to fish. Any suggestions for an area we could spend a half day bank fishing?

We were in Yellowstone a few weeks ago and I saw a guy catch some trout in park when we stopped for a picnic. In Jackson there were a lot of outfitters and rivers of all sizes are all around. Although I dont fly fish, you could ask locally and probably get a lot of good advice. The snake river was still really high and fast because of the snow melt so that wasn't an option at the beginning of June. Nevertheless, you are gonna love being up there.

Cool, thanks! This will be our first time so I didn't even know if it was even an option. We're taking 15 days, renting a suburban, and hitting the road. Going to Carlsbad Caverns, Mesa Verde, riding the Cumbres & Toltec railroad in Chama, NM, Salt Lake City, 3 nights in W Yellowstone, 3 in Jackson Hole, then 3 days driving back. A true Griswold wild west road trip.

Definitely a lot of fly fishing in the park, make sure you look up the rules there. National parks tend to have rules like only artificial bait.

Yes, fishing will absolutely be an option both in Yellowstone/ Jackson Hole and the surrounding areas.

Are you looking to fly fish? Bring your own tackle?

I'd highly recommend a fly fishing float trip depending on your son's age. Will be around $500. So not sure if that's in the budget. But you will float 6-10 miles of river over 4 hours, great way to see the country, the 2 of you should catch or have the opportunity to catch 20-40 fish, and its a very unique experience.

Just check out some fly fishing shops in the area for tips on bank fishing. They are generally very helpful.

You need to talk to the Park Rangers and see if you need a special permit/license to fish inside Yellowstone. They are very strict and protective of the rivers/lakes in the area.

Wouldn't Clark have thrown in the North Rim and Zion as well?

We considered grand canyon but it have taken time away from Yellowstone. We can drive to GC another time, a lot easier than diving to Yellowstone. I mainly want my 15 year old to experience it before he's too cool to go on a family road trip, which I'm probably 4 years too late on, but he'll get over it.

The fishing (in the rivers, for trout) in the park is by-in-large not as good as outside the park largely due to the thermal activity of the water. I can’t remember the license requirements, but I know barbed hooks are prohibited—at least in some areas. Also be careful because part of the park is in MT and part is in WY.
I lived in billings, laurel, Bozeman, Missoula, and red lodge Montana over the cross of the last 15 yrs (before relocating to TX last year). Since I’m not there anymore, I don’t mind giving you my best spot: Clark, Wyoming and turn off at the Edleweiss bar and head to the kayak launch by the “devil’s spine” rock formation (just ask a local if you need help finding that...and watch for rattlersnakes!)
Or if you are up by Red Lodge,Montana you can fish in the the Rock Creek-good small stream for kids to get around in (and tube down). Then from Red Lodge you can drive the Beartooth Pass (best views in he world) and fish the hundreds of lakes up there on top of the plateau. Really just depends on which way you are coming from to get to the park and will depend on the water height (which currently is super high, but should calm down in a few weeks.)

It’s the snow melt and all the rain we’ve been getting. Polar opposite of last year.

Literally anywhere there is a river. You have the snake river right there. Lake yellowstone. Tons of streams in the park. Just throw a line in and enjoy. Best trout fishing in the country in those parts

If you’re staying in West Yellowstone, head over towards Ennis. Tons of fly fishing outside park boundaries in those parts. My twin brother and cousin live in Bozeman and Ennis seems to be a favorite spot of theirs. My parents rented an awesome VRBO right next to a ton of fishing spots. Water was too high for great fishing while they were here a few weeks ago, but it should be headed towards better fishing now.

If you enjoy little walkable main streets, Ennis and Virginia City are cool towns to take a stroll through. Virginia City claims to have not changed at all since the 1800s.

What you think about the Greys?

It's real accessible with lots of easy road access (maybe up around Snaggletooth?).

Go a few miles north out of West Yellowstone on 191. You will hit the Madison river, cross it and take a left onto Madison Rim Road. You can take that down to near the banks of the Madison between the park and Hebgen Lake. I float fish from the park until emptying in Hebgen quite often and it's usually pretty productive and easy to get to. The scenery is amazing as well. Lots of Bald Eagles. You can go out on the Hebgen Peninsula and fish the bank near Horse Butte. Small fish but fun for kids to be able to cast at small rainbows form a small wade into the lake. I'm pretty familiar with this area as my parents live on Hedgen Peninsula lol.

An interesting but productive lake fish, go visit Earthquake Lake right where the Madison empties into it. Not only do you get to visit the Earthquake Lake visitor center for history and stuff, you get to fish a flooded timber lake with lots of big fish.

I'll be there on Saturday. We are staying on the Madison across from the palisades. Will be doing a float trip. There are some campgrounds around Ennis with some easy access to the Madison River if you are planning on bank or wade fishing.

I also saw that you can fish off the bank at the Jackson Lake Dam. That may be an option?

Any idea what we'd use for bait/lures for trout without fly rods? I'm going to bring a couple spinning reels with us. I guess I can just ask the locals when I buy the fishing license.

I was out at Taggert Lake a couple of weeks ago and there was a guy near where we were posted that didn't see much action. As has been mentioned, the water is super cold.
