I've been spitballing a trip to see the lights and I think I've landed on Fairbanks. Has anyone done this, or have experience with Fairbanks and have some pointers? Is there anything else to see or do there?

I think we'll go for 4 days, which gives us a decent window in case of clouds or bad weather. January seems to be a good month for it despite the cold. I'm looking into companies that will pick you up and bring you to their viewing site because my south Louisiana arse is NOT driving in Alaska in winter

I’ve not been so can’t offer tips there, but those I know that have been said it’s very underwhelming. They described the lights as faint, silvery clouds. Allegedly the brights greens/purples only really show up when looking through a camera.

Chena Hot Springs is the best place in the area.

Oh no. Not when you get a full sky display. Its surreal, and vivid.

I would have opted for Iceland, but to each his own.

Went to Fairbanks one January for a few days but never got to see the northern lights because it was cloudy the entire time. The sun never rose above the horizon while I was there.

It was cold, coldest I’ve ever experienced -25.

Driving wasn’t bad they keep the roads clear.

Driving in the interior is very easy in winter, snow is so dry that its not much different than pavement.

Chena Hot Springs is set up for Aurora viewing, also has dog sledding, snow machining, etc.

Auorora Forecast.

About 60 miles NE of Fairbanks in the hills. Lots of Asians go there.

Make sure to stop in at the North Pole and get your Christmas decoration shopping in.

Go walk around the Creamers Field Migratory Waterfowl Refuge

I've seen them on the north slope a few times up there. Yeah best to leave a few days open because the weather is always such a crap shoot. And yean it will be cold as balls that time of year

Amazing to see if you get a clear day though

It is very hit or miss from my experience. But when it is on it is amazing. Definitely should be prepared to possibly be disappointed though

We stayed up in Denali Park at Princess Lodge there. Remember seeing all road signs in Japanese and was told they are fascinated with northern lights and come often.

Some friends did an Iceland to Norway cruise this past January to see the aurora borealis. They were very disappointed - someone on the ship told them to take pictures with their iPhones saying the lights show up better on a digital image.

Some nights it aint there, some nights its weak, some its strong.

Its the luck of the draw, but there are Aurora forecast pages you can watch to see if Activity is promising.

You can take a long exposure with a camera and get more of the Aurora, particularly when its hard to see due to light pollution.

Wife and I are going in February. Plan going on days close to the new moon. Go as close to the spring equinox as you can. As one person stated, there is a lot to do during the winter but it will be cold. We have the Chena Hot Springs, snowmobiling, dogsledding. Castner ice caves and Reindeer ranch as our activities during the day. I would love if you hit me up after you get back to provide some information about your trip. Have a great trip.
