The guy that owns the local Gold/Silver store near me has a file cabinet that has currency from around the world. He buys from travelers that have returned for the current exchange rate and sells + a small rate.
Your local bank can get you Euros and Pounds, but they sometimes have problems with bhat's, Philippine pesos, dongs, yuans and yens, etc.
He also buys their coins, since exchange businesses won't fool with coins. Too heavy, small value.
Just a thought.

I spent three weeks there recently and only needed cash once to get into a toilet at a train station. I did get some from an ATM a day or so after arriving in case I needed them and then had to work hard to spend them near the end. I wouldn’t get any euros until you need it.

I learned the lesson to only take out the amount of foreign cash I could "write off" about ten years ago. Euro and Yen were a bit different, since I was certainly going to have the opportunity to spend them at some point in the near future. Apple Pay, Suica, my USAA debit cards, all worked flawlessly. I've spent months in the UK, for instance, and can't remember the last time I actually held a pound note or coin.
But RSA Rand.. I had about $11 left on me when I got to the Joburg airport for my flight back to FRA. Of course, to the locals, that's like a Benjamin. My taxi took forever to get to the terminal, and I shoved every Rand I had across the bar and told the Zulu bartender I had 11 minutes until my flight boarded (I left the hotel 3 hours prior, but Obama and civil unrest created delays), and I needed as much alcohol as he was permitted to serve me, fast. I took my drink and went back to my seat, and 90 seconds later, he shows up with another, and says sir, you have nine minutes until you board.
That man was a legend. Best $11 I ever spent.

Most airports i've been to have had a bank ATM fairly close after getting out of customs. Cards are much more accepted there now than say 15 years ago, so it really isn't that big of a deal.

Once we arrived in France, went to ATM, just used my debit card and got the Euro's.

you don't need any until there are the available at the airport ATM. just get them there.
this is true of every country. don't exchange at the exchanger. just get whatever currency at the ATM using your major bank US card. it will work. except for Cuba.
worst case scenario is it doesn't work and you get a text and and a notification in your banking app asking if you are overseas. you say yes, and then the ATM works. after the trip, just keep the leftovers, don't exchange them back, its not worth the effort unless you actually need dollars to live.
