Disney/Universal Covid Review

Spent a quick trip with $29 RT flights to Orlando. One day at Universal and one day at Hollywood Studios Disney.
If you can handle the mask all day, it is a great time to go for short wait times. Besides the virtual que for Star Wars rise of the resistance, every other ride was a walk on or 10min/less wait time. Every ride was open - Only a few shows and restaurants were closed.
They did a great job of social distancing, hand sanitizing before and after rides, leaving gaps between rows etc., while still making it fun. Great time to go with older kids. Yes it was hot as hell, but with no wait times, you were mostly on rides, in shade or air conditioned areas.
Park hopper for Universal is still available, but not for Disney. That was the only disappointment. We rode every ride at Hollywood Studios twice and still finished by 2, so a second park could have been easily doable.
Hilton Doubletree at the entrance to Universal was $59/night.

Thanks!!!
My youngest is 5, and I want to bring her (and the other kids) in a few weeks. I didn't know there was no Park Hopper at WDW ... so thanks again for the info.
And thanks for the hotel tip ... we need two rooms.

Definitely considering it as we have Disney AP so the hopper doesn't really matter. The only thing holding us back is the masks. We might wait until October when it' slightly cooler.

Good friend is a Disney travel agent and they just spent a week at DW
Saw them Sunday and they said it was amazing. They rode everything 3x and only wait was Rise and it was 10 minutes
Said they walked off the Millennium ride and went back on 3x.
Said if you can muster it then do it. She also said the resorts are around 50-60% capacity and since they aren’t doing magic hour then just book a cheap hotel off property nearby.

I could have gotten $34 round trip direct from DFW a few weeks back. Should have done it

bet your arse if i find them for that ill be getting them.

The flight we purchased was on Spirit, direct to Orlando from MSY with no bags. You get a “personal item” for free which can also be a backpack. Each of us had a backpack which was plenty for just two days.
I don’t see any from little rock, but Dallas has plenty of $35 options two weeks out.

You didn't have to quarantine for 14 days?
Posted on 8/7/20 at 4:11 pm to LSUsmartass
No, I think that was lifted awhile ago. If it is still in effect, we were not told anything about it and had no issues.
Went and took a rapid test yesterday before visiting our parents after the trip, and all tested negative.

We went last week of July, one of the top Disney trips we have taken. Short lines all day long and felt safe the entire time. Stayed at pop century resort 5 nights. Flight of passage and smugglers run were 5 minute waits all day long. Longest line besides virtual was Mickey and Minnie railway (we waited 25 minutes).

The bottom line is if short wait times is your primary objective, this is a good time to go. Thats the biggest pro for a trip right now.
So much magic is missing, so many dining experiences arent available and I can totally understand not wanting to wear a mask the entire time.
Theres going to be some big discounts down the road and I applaud Disney for not throwing any down now to try and increase attendance but for what I like Disney to be....this isn't the time for me to go.
Universal on the other hand (for me) is a different story.

We went and spent a week at Universal and Ubered over to Animal Kingdom one day. Universal was amazing if you want to do all the rides as many times as you want. Absolutely no waits. You wouldn’t even need to buy the Express Pass, honestly. The downside is that there are very few dining options open in the park but Universal isn’t really a place you eat in the parks as much as you would at Disney.
Disney was also amazing. Flight of Passage is usually a 3 hour wait and it was a walk on the entire day. They gave you the option when you got off to get back into the line, what little there was of it. It just unreal. Some dining closed but they had more options than Universal and the food at Animal Kingdom is our favorite, anyway. I highly recommend the fried rice from Yak and Yeti quick service. We also got a snack from Flame Tree and it was crazy because neither place had a line and we often skipped eating there because the lines were so long and they had not yet added mobile ordering.
Anyway, if you can go then go! It’s not exactly the same but for us it was well worth it and it was the cheapest trip we have taken. We paid nothing for the Disney or Universal tickets because we have APs.
Also, if you have APs to either place check the expiration date. We thought our Universal AP had expired way back in November but it turned out that when we bought it they gave us 6 free months tacked on and then COVID closures had them tack on 3 more months. So we initially bought tickets but luckily checked and got that money back which was a huge chunk.

We did 4 days at Universal back in June and are doing 7 days at Disney starting this coming Wednesday, the 12th.
Universal was fantastic. In 4 days we rode everything at least twice and could have ridden everything more than that. I rode Hagrids 8(!) times.
Based on the videos I've seen of Disney, it looks like Rise of the Resistance is the only ride that will need planning in order for us to be able to ride. Everything else looks like a straight walk-on.

We were able to get dining reservations for every day of our trip. We didn't nab any character dinings (had intended to do a princess dining with my 6 year old this time but those aren't happening), but we are knocking off a few restaurants that were on our list that we haven't done before.
Skipper Canteen, 50s Prime Time Cafe, Oga's Cantina, Sanaa at Animal Kingdom Lodge, Liberty Tree Tavern, Sci-Fi Dine In Theater, Chef Mickey's for a cheaper breakfast (because no characters). Some of those are usually quite difficult to get a reservation for, so we took full advantage.
There are great dining experiences available if you're not simply hanging your hat on character dining experiences. The food at the Epcot festival also looks fantastic and the crowds there have been non-existent.

Not sure exactly what you mean by this. But even with AP you can only go to one park a day.

I see there are no meal plans available, how far in advance did you make reservations? We are looking at going next weekend.

I just booked this exact hotel for the 21-24th after getting Spirit flight out of nola for $51 .... Hotel was $61 a night ...
How was the hotel? And do they offer free shuttles to USO or did you Uber/lyft?
Pretty pumped to spend a couple days at USO. Last time I've been was for HHN 2 years ago but we just flew in for the event and flew out the next day...
Masks won't bother us, since we both work in hospitals and have to wear them every day regardless

I booked everything through priceline, just started adjusting days until i saw that super cheap flight and went from there...were those Spirit Flights you were looking at? (idk if they fly out of either of those airports) Their algorithm adjust their prices constantly based on demand, I'd just keep checking, I don't see the hotel prices going up and current park deals are all good through the end of september...
We're just gonna go to universal, I haven't been to IOA since the weekend the original Harry Potter Land opened 10 years ago, looking forward to all the new stuff...
