Beatnik on the River. Also a great wine bar right above it. Good Funk.

Thanks for the great guide. Heading there in August for a bachelor party (12 guys mostly late 20's). We're staying around the Gold Coast and will likely attempt to do one big sit down dinner. Any recommendations for a restaurant around Gold Coast that could accommodate a potentially loud and inebriated large group?

Thanks,

With 12 people, most restaurants will probably require to reach out ahead of time. Do some checking, but I'm thinking it'll be tough to book anything directly on OpenTable, Resy, and Tock. Don't get booted out of the restaurant for being TOO drunk, but few ideas of places that are used to larger groups: Quartino's, Gibsons Steakhouse (second floor private room), Frontier (full animal ordering available and Wicker is chalked with bars), and Topo Gigio (lively patio, walking distance from Gold Coast, and Wells St + Division makes for a great day and night of bar hopping).

Bookmarked this. Going to Chicago for the first time this summer. Cubs game, White Sox game, day trip to Milwaukee for a Brewers game.

Family of 5 so we have ourselves a nice Airbnb in the Lake View area. Couple of grocery stores nearby and its on the public transit route. Looking forward to Milly's, a good Chicago beef sandwich, cheese curds in Milwaukee and whatever other good tasting treats Chicago/Milwaukee have to offer.

Updated OP to include a couple places I've been to recently: Fat Peach in Bridgeport (breakfast/bakery) and Zarella in River North (pizza).

For weekend visitors that don't want to venture into the neighborhoods, Zarella is a great option that is walking distance from many hotels. As you could imagine, it gets pretty crowded. We went at open on Sunday to grab a bar seat.

OP heading to Three Dots and a Dash Thursday during a small window on business travel? Worth burning my only few hours downtown?

If you're looking for bright, tropical drinks, go for it. Wouldn't say it's a place too many Chicagoans frequent but it is popular.

If you only have a few hours in the immediate downtown area, I'll say a bar stool at Gilt Bar (or trying your luck downstairs at The Library) or Arbella. The latter has a menu of 'traveling' Old Fashioneds from around the world + a versaile list of classic cocktails. Great spot and may not need to be there as early as Gilt Bar, which can crowd up with people waiting for Bavette's.

ETA: If you're planning on taking the Blue Line back to ORD (assuming it's ORD and not MDW), cocktail bar in West Loop might be the play then you can just walk up to Grand station - After, Bisous and Kumiko are the best in West Loop, but Booze Box (under SUSHI DOKKU), Lazy Bird, and The Aviary / The Office are good plays, as well. If work is footing the bill, totally understand if you're planning Lyft/Uber. Just be sure to monitor traffic because there is construction northbound (outbound) on the Kennedy, which has created some already bad congestion issues.

Went to Tanta (Peruvian) for dinner a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it.

Would recommend trying if you haven’t been yet

Did their rooftop a few years back for a rehearsal dinner. Was pretty drunk, but I remember everything being good

Any thoughts on the Palmer House Hotel by Hilton? Or at least that general area to stay in for a long weekend?

Solid location for a weekend. Right next to every CTA station, including Monroe (Blue), Monroe (Red), and Adams/Wabash (everything else). Also, quick walk to the Art Institute, Millennium Park, and Grant Park. Pretty easy access to Riverwalk, Mag Mile, River North, etc. Not a bad homebase for enjoying downtown, but also getting into the neighborhoods via train.

I was just there for work taking Clients to the Cubs game Monday and the traffic to/from ORD still sucks. Took the blue line in/out and it was way easier.

All other things (flight times, $, etc) equal - Midway or O’Hare?

All things equal, MDW for domestic travel. I probably wouldn't include money because that's pretty dependent on carrier / where you're coming from. You'll have more options on Delta or Southwest into MDW, whereas United completely dominates Terminals 1 and 2 at ORD. I live along the Blue Line and fly almost exclusively to LAX, LGA, and SFO on United for work/family, so I never have much reason to be at MDW.

Midway all day, every day if you’re staying downtown if all other factors are equal.

I saved a fair amount of money on the "big" attractions (Sears (Willis) Tower Observation Deck, The Art Institute, Field Museum, etc.) by using the CityPASS option for admission. You get admission for 5 different venues, Shedd and Skydeck Chicago are the "set" ones, and you pick three others from a decent list.

Chicago CityPASS Link

One of my favorite things I did when I went a few years back was the Chicago Architecture Center Boat Tour. Takes you down the Chicago River providing all kinds of information about the city's architecture. It's all volunteer docents so they're really informative and passionate about it too. About a 90 minute ride and really, really enjoyable.

This is great stuff. We are staying a few night with the kids at the langham this summer. A couple of quesrions:

1. Any idea how stroller friendly the blue line is from ORD and how stroller friendly the Clark/lake stop is. May end up just taking cab but car seats are such a pain to put in and out.

2. Do you know anything about perilla Korean steakhouse? It’s right near our hotel. It’s listed on eater as a best in Chicago restaurant . . . also seems like it could be a very overrated hotel restaurant.

Stroller on the Blue Line is totally fine. Just be mindful of space, especially if you're riding during/around rush hour.

Clark/Lake is accessible enough. That's where I get off for work. There is an elevator that, as of now, has no service alerts on the CTA website. If that isn't in service, just take the escalator on the Clark-LaSalle/Lake side of the platform. Don't go the other way towards Wells, as it's a bit less accessible at the top of the escalator and there are signs that warn no suitcases, anyway.

I've been to PERILLA Fare in West Loop, but never their steakhouse. If you're looking for a steakhouse that is kid-friendly and close to the hotel area, Weber Grill is pretty known to be that option.
