Not exactly Gulag but not a fun place to be as an OT baller from a first-world country. Makes me think twice about my upcoming Waldorf Astoria Maldives stay in April.

frick that. I’m officially cancelling my reservations at the JW in April. I guess Key Largo for my honeymoon instead.

Traveling to a place like that in times like these is a big risk. Hell, just about anywhere outside the US is. It is a farce and shouldn't be that way. But that's where we are given the hysteria over this virus.

Hmmmm, almost as if traveling abroad during a worldwide pandemic might be a bad idea. Go figure.

I am in the Maldives right now. The article is somewhat misleading, for the following reasons:

(1) The author was not staying at a resort, which makes her situation atypical. Rather, she was on a boat tour, it seems, that had no affiliation with any particular resort. That left her unprotected;

(2) The quarantine policies vary by resort. You should contact your resort prior to departure/booking to determine what would happen if you test positive for Covid. I am staying at Joali (which is absolutely fricking fantastic and gorgeous), which allows guests to quarantine in their villas for 14 days at a reduced rate. Other resorts like Soneva Jani appear to waive the room fee altogether in the event of quarantine. Still others require payment of the full rate. And others yet state that they will transfer you to the Male hospital. Pick a resort that has a friendly policy;

(3) You can get insurance that will reimburse the costs of quarantine as part of trip delay coverage. I purchased a Trawick product that offered up to $7000 in quarantine costs. My girlfriend got the same policy, so we had $14,000 aggregate;

(4) The reputable resorts will conduct PCR tests for you and return the results in 24 hours.

I personally have had an incredible time here. It is by far the best "beach vacation" I have been on and, in my estimation, is appreciably better than the Carribean, Mexico, or the Gulf Coast. The scenery is sublime, the ocean is calm and incredibly warm, the waters are clear, and the service is impeccable. Again, just my view.
