What gives? This has always been an amazing time to travel abroad for fair prices. Now it's like sky high everywhere you want to go.
So bummed - we already have the sitter booked and vacation days saved but we cant fly anywhere overseas for under $1500 per person. Asia and South America are closer to $2300 regardless of where you depart from in the US. The hotels and reward point redemptions are jacked the hell up too.
Is this airlines and hotels waking up to recent travel patterns or something? It really sucks.

Looks like airfare to Hawaii is cheapish....
And I saw near $1500 to Dublin or Brussels, below $1500 to Helsinki, London, Oslo, Stockholm, and a few others.

Airfare to Hawaii is the only reasonable thing I'm seeing but we just went in October and the Hotels are super high (3x what we paid in October) for any 4.5 or 5 star Marriott properties.
We are likely just doing San Francisco and Los Angeles for a pooptastic Xmas. The flights are cheap and 5 star Hotwire hotels are a steal. Haven't been in a while so it should be okay.

They are always high.
Yep.
We travel to Europe a fair amount around NYE and the flights are always pricey until a week or so after. Now hotels are usually fine as long as you're beyond Christmas. We've always dealt with availability issues for NYE but the prices are usually fairly reasonable. Of course, once you're into early January, then you get your pick of 5 stars for a fraction of the price.

Booked at the EDITION in Bevely Hills / West Hollywood on points, mates - Christmas through Jan 1st.
Heated pool - NYE party, have a few friends and mates in LA.
Only worry is that it's not great bang for our buck on points and is LA too cold over Christmas (even with a heated pool) to fully enjoy this setup? Day trips to Malibu, Santa Monica, etc. are fun I guess.

how close to "christmas" we talking.
If December around the 13th counts, its actually cheaper than what I did last year out of Chicago

We always go like the 24th through the 5th so we get tons of work holidays baked into our trip and can go somewhere for 2 full weeks.
We've done Thailand, Japan, Mexico before. Sucks that it's just too high this year. Marriott scooping up SPG and devaluing the points is really starting to be felt.

I've noticed this also. Bought a 1 way to Thailand, but cant find a return flight in early January for under $1,300. But a the weeks before and after they are around $500. At first i thought it was a New Years in asia thing. But now i have no clue.

Same - it's not just a little bit more, it's nearly 3x the normal cost.
Flights abroad over christmas used to be relatively cheap b/c business flights were obviously down but the airlines wanted to keep volume relatively high.

Ooooff to Christmas in Los Angeles, to each their own but hard, hard pass for me. Not sure how you fill that many days in LA with not a ton to do outside of look @ the ocean and eat and drink, but I suppose having friends there will help.
Were flights to Canada also higher than normal? We've looked at Whistler but it's always expensive over NYE - I would think though, some other areas wouldn't be too expensive. I've always found flights to be high over Christmas/NYE - or any holiday for that matter.

You probably waited too long to book. We are at 6-7 weeks out at this point to Xmas, Airlines aren't running any deals and they have their rates jacked because they know they will fill them.
You should have tried to book that time of year 2-3 months ago IMO. 60-90 days out for airfare unless its a peak time then 4-6 months IMO to find a deal.
