Are we just naming places that exist now?

Direct flights from Houston that are 2-ish hours.

ETA, sorry I didn't quote the post it was directed at, I figured it would be pretty obvious.

Americans are some of the biggest pussies when traveling. But they have no issues with going out for drinks in the French quarter

We had some Americans stay at our house in tulum. It has ten foot high walls with an electric fence on top. They were freaking out they couldn't lock the third floor balcony. You'd need a fricking crane to get onto the third floor

Do you intend on needlessly provoking a federale?

Do you intend on trying to purchase cocaine?

If the answer to both of those questions is no, then you’ll be fine.

If you were traveling to New Orleans, I’d ask the same questions, only replacing federale with LA state trooper.

Mexico City too?
Eh. I'd feel more safe there than in Cancun. Overall, though, I just don't like the risk/reward of visiting a failed narco state.

Don't forget what happened in Cabo not that long ago:

quote:

The bodies of six men were found Wednesday hanging from bridges in the Mexican state of Baja California Sur, the state’s attorney general’s office said. Four bodies were found in the municipality of Los Cabos, the other two near the state capital of La Paz. The bodies were found suspended from three bridges located near the two main international airports and the highways leading to the popular beach resort of Cabo San Lucas.

That is to say, tourists going about their business drove under an overpass with half a dozen dead bodies swinging from it. I am just not aware of any other country that people talk about casually visiting with their families where this is even a remote possibility.

Monterrey used to be virtually the nicest city in North America - and now I think it actually would be stupid to visit there. On and on.

I wouldn't have gone 2 years ago either. And some of the incidents I refer to were longer ago than that.

I was just in Merida. That city is by far safer than any big city I've been to in the US. And it aint close. What's your point?

South Africa qualifies, except they'd be burning bodies and mini buses on fire.

That's true. I would not encourage people to casually travel to South Africa.

My point is be careful where you go. I actually am going on a Habitat for Humanity build in rural Mexico this summer, so I don't even take my own advice.

Cancun is very safe. Stay at the all inclusive, and book your tours etc. through the resort.

Stay away from the big clubs in cancun at night, and don't go looking to buy drugs and you will be fine.

Went about 10 years ago for my honeymoon. We forgot our closed toed shoes so we had a car bring us to the mall. NBD, even off-resort.

You mean the post about a two year old incident, which didn't involve a cartel shootout? What about it?

Cancun is very safe especially in the tourist zone. But isla mujeres is better and has no seaweed.

Do you travel gurus think we have anything to really worry about?

We just got back from a wedding in Cabo last night. Spent more time at the marina/downtown than the resort because we fished every morning. They played Lee Greenwood "God Bless The USA" at the wedding reception per the request of the groom. We never felt uncomfortable the entire trip or had anyone say anything. They want that tourist money, they don't give a shite what is happening in the states.
