The gf and I have never been to Boston. We'd be flying from DFW. I'm checking hotel prices and it seems like anything in downtown (Boston Common, etc) has a pretty high nightly rate(I'm no OT baller).

Is there a close in suburb with good public transportation- rail etc where a Holiday Inn, Hampton Inn etc would be more affordable but still be easy to get to the area attractions? In a safe area?

For instance, we stayed in Alexandria for our DC trip a few weeks ago.

Wife and I went there this fall and found a pretty affordable Airbnb in the Back Bay Area. Super walkable to anything you’d want to do. Great restaurants and bars as well.

Might be worth looking in to.

Nothing is budget friendly in that city except a self guided Freedom Trail walk. That said, during non baseball season there is a pretty decent hotel near Fenway with a rock n roll theme that is reasonable.

I've stayed at the Residence Inn Boston Back Bay a few blocks from Fenway during the off season and it wasn't too expensive but it's alot of walking to get to the T up on Commonwealth.

We prefer something neat the common and have found the most success with short term rentals.

If you want to save money, get something with a full kitchen so you can cook your won breakfast, eat leftovers for lunch sometimes and not have to pay for every single meal.

As others have mentioned, have you checked AirBnB? Usually can find options cheaper than hotels in the Back Bay/Beacon Hill area.

If you’re willing to stay outside the city but with access to a T stop to ride into downtown, check out Quincy. It should be a little cheaper.

Edit: if you want to give a ballpark budget I’m happy to help out in your search.

Went last year with the wife.. we stayed at the Westin Seaport, ended up costing $250/night including all the fees.. Only thing is you would have to take a bus to get to the T, so we used Uber to start and end the day.. probably had around $20-$30/day on uber, but seemed reasonable and more cost effective than other options we considered

Wife and I are staying at The Newbury for 5 nights and are paying around $1800. It's in a great location but everyone is right. Nothing is cheap here from the research I have done.

Here's the listing:

Again, we loved the location. Tons of restaurants and bars around. Walkable to pretty much anything you'd want to do.

That’s a good rate. I’ve stayed there and a few places nearby. Walkable if the weather isn’t awful and you don’t mind stretching your legs a bit.

Part of the nice thing about Boston is its walkability. And in the fall that’s a nice time to walk around and explore (usually).

Aside from Ubers the T is also useful and much cheaper.
