leaving from atlanta I would be okay with it since there are likely quite a few flights to NYC before your later flight. from a smaller city I would be a little more nervous about it.

We’ve done that before and actually are doing it again this summer because NY - Dublin was much cheaper than BOS - Dublin.

If you’re going to be flying into JFK, get a day pass at the TWA hotel. It’s a really nice way to spend the day rather than sitting at the airport.

THIS. The TWA hotel is so cool, it's like stepping back in time to the 60s "Mad Men" days. During a trip to NYC the family and I actually spent about 2 hours just walking around, checking it out.

The day pass, I imagine, gets you access to their nice rooftop pool:

The other option is to actually go there a day early as the OP discussed and spending the night there.

It does. And when we did a day there it was nice to have a room to leave our stuff, shower, and nap in as well before catching our next flight.

We do this often when flying cross country. I don’t normally fly the same day when flying international. When we flew to Singapore this summer we flew to Newark and stayed there 2 nights before flying to and from Singapore. Did the same flying back. We usually do that when flying internationally.

I actually flew out of the TWA terminal to London many years ago.

Try reading the thread. I'm not checking any bags and I'm saving over 4 thousand dollars. Not sure what kind of lunches you eat but mine typically run well under that

Imagine a bag gets lost. SWA's fault? Norse's fault? Who knows, but your kid won't have a toothbrush for days.

…couldn’t he just buy a new toothbrush?

I highly recommend a car service from LaGuardia to JFK for a family of five. As others have mentioned they are both pain in the arse airports to get to and from via public transportation. A few years ago my dad had a stroke at JFK and I had to fly to Newark and my sister flew to LaGuardia to get to JFK because that was the quickest way for us to get to NYC. Getting from airport to airport is a chore. Newark is by far the easiest.

I'm renting a car for the day.

1. It was like 10 dollars more than a shuttle/car service.

2. If our morning flight is on time we will have like 5 hours to kill and can take it to the city to walk around the park/grab a pizza or whatever and obviously it will be able to hold our luggage during that time.
