What all is there to do at Ferrari? Are kids allowed? I think you can rent cars by the minute?

We did a high speed rail from Rome to Florence to Bologna to Venice.
Bologna was enjoyable, but my fraternity in college has roots there, so my visit was a little more sentimental.
Florence was by far my favorite as well. Thoroughly enjoyed the statue of David tour. We also did a half day in Greve, which I recommend looking into. Whenever we go back we will schedule more time in Greve.

We did five nights in Bologna last September. We’ve been to Italy several times and wanted to explore this region. Rented a Vrbo close to train station, quiet, about a 15 min walk to the center. We enjoyed it, food was great. Rented a car and did a Parmigiano/Reggiano cheese factory visit. Highly recommended. Also did a balsamic vinegar tasting in what ended up being a woman’s house in Modena.

Did Parma as a day trip and enjoyed it. Also did Florence on the train on a day trip as it is just a little more than a half hour away.

Ferrari factory would be a great tour. Not too far from Bologna if I remember correctly.

Ducati museum is in Bologna, awesome if you like racing or motorcycles. I've heard, they even speak English on the phone now. You can even tour the factory floor. You have to book in advance.

I think we have decided to fly direct to MSY then to Munich.

Innsbruck, stay overnight.
Dolomites, stay overnight.
Cinque Terre, stay for two nights.
Florence, stay overnight.
Bologna for three nights, wedding.

Now to decide on car or trains...

If you fly into Austria and drive to Italy one way I think the one way fee will likely murder any sort of potential for it to be similar in cost to a train. But I'm not sure how you could justify doing the dolomites right by train, personally. There are SOOOO many options in the Alps that are no where near a train station.

All great places but you are going to spend a lot of time travelling to places that are not that close to each other. I would choose fewer destinations and spend more time in each. The best way to do this is to save Austria and the Dolomites for the next trip. That is just my opinion.

Yeash, that itinerary sounds awful. Touching a lot of places and not really experiencing any.

Well, you're going to be doing most of your "seeing" with you arse on a car seat or a train seat. Dolomites for one night is ridiculously stupid. You're traveling in narrow mountain roads and 30 miles can take an hour or more to drive.

Have to hurry up and get that photo of the famous thing for instagram and hurry back to the car to catch the next one. Sounds like a fun trip!

Looked hard into doing Dolomites this summer but couldn’t figure out how to do it for less than 3 nights without it becoming a stupid attempt. Next time.

In other news Emirates switched planes for my flight from the 777 to the a380 so pretty pumped about that.

That's NOT going to work. You will just spend an enormous amount of hassle trying to get from one place to the other and by the time you get there it will be dark and you will be stressed and tired. And the Dolomites require a small car and careful planning - not a whistle stop destination {seriously watch some Youtube videos). Florence as a quick stop is pointless.

I would pick one destination and spend my time there before the wedding/Bologna. Fly direct into Milan, Venice or Rome then hop a train to that spot assuming it's not your arrival city. In October, my vote would be Florence. Explore all that Florence has to offer on foot and use it as a base for easy day trips by train or bus to Pisa, Siena, San Gimignano, etc. You could also do a wine tour or food tour.

Don’t over travel. Tuscany is the GOAT region in Italy and the world frankly. Volterra, Siena, Todi, and Cortona are our favorite spots in Tuscany (technically Todi is in Umbria province).

Some people simply can’t conceive that their way is not the only way.
I think your itinerary sounds great.

This simply isn't true. The itnerary he put out was basically traveling every day and if you've been to Europe you know that travel can eat up the bulk of the day.

That “some people simply can’t conceive that their way is not the only way” is absolutely true.

Whether the itinerary is terrible or good is subjective. Even he might agree after the fact, but that isn’t the point.

I travel fast and hard and prioritize things others ignore while avoiding things others plan their trips around, so I understand the point you are trying to make.

But sometimes the issue isn't good vs. terrible, but rather feasible vs. impossible. I swear sometimes people think Europe must have those Star Trek gizmos that can just instantly beam you from one place to the next.
