Where are you moving from?

It isn't San Diego and it isn't New Orleans. It took me a year to acclimate, but I've lived in 5 other large cities, and it is by far my favorite from a quality-of-life standpoint. Workable traffic, centrally located, nice people, great neighborhoods.

It was an incredible food scene for a city it’s size. Downtown has really been redeveloped and has come a long way in the last 15 years or so. You’ll live in one of the suburbs (Homewood, Vestavia, Mountain Brook, etc) that all have their own neighborhoods and personalities.

Lived here my whole life.

You need to look at the south side of town: Southside, Vestavia, Mountain Brook, Homewood, Hoover, Trussville, Pelham, Alabaster. If you want some land and don't mind the commute, there are plenty of places to do that in St Clair, Shelby, Jefferson, Blount, and Tuscaloosa County.

There are private schools here, but all the over-the-mountain school systems are good. The airport is underrated and is easy to get to and easy to navigate once you're there. You are close to the mountains of NC/GA. You are close to the gulf beaches. You are hours away from NOLA, Nashville, and ATL for large city amenities.

This is a great nutshell. I tried to get my wife to move there as I think it's underrated and on the way up, big time.

The evolving and upgrading downtown is a lot of fun and over-the-mountain is clean and quiet with lots of good amenities.

It’ll be something between BR/Laffy and New Orleans.

I’ve lived in mountain Brook and Liberty park since 2012 and love it. I’d recommend those 2 areas. If you have kids, mountain Brook is a no brainer with their school system since it’s one of the best in the country.

You couldn’t be farther from the truth. BR and Laffy don’t hold a candle to B’ham.

If you'd asked me to recommend Bham 10 years ago, I wouldn't have done it. Parts of the city have really turned around: Southside, Avondale, Lakeview, and the Morris Ave/1st Ave area. Lots of bars, restaurants, and things to do. Also, the area around Top Golf and Protective Stadium have good things.

With that said, all those areas are near some no-go zones. I'm always amazed at the casual attitude of most people I see in Avondale when one of the large projects is literally across the RR tracks just blocks away. Same with Protective Stadium and it's proximity to Fountain Heights.

I leave the downtown stuff to the kids and adventurous adults. My wife and I stay in the Vestavia, Mnt Brook, Homewood, and Cahaba Heights areas of town. Almost zero crime and every amenity you could want. Oh, and the food in Bham is great. It's not New Orleans, but no where is.

Which is why I said Birmingham is better than them and worse than New Orleans as far as “things to do/eat.”

The difference here is that I don't worry about getting mugged or shot doing anything in Bham.

If school systems are going to be a factor in the future then for sure look at the over the mountain places listed. If not then be aware that a lot of them are priced with the school systems in mind.

We moved from Avondale/Crestwood recently because of schools. Aubie mentioned no-go areas, which is 100% accurate, but the crime stays surprisingly contained to those areas. It’s the most literal representation of “wrong side of the tracks” you could imagine. We were a couple miles from a some areas that I wouldn’t drive through at night, yet in 6 years of living there never had single issue.

Really comes down to what you’re looking for, but a city this size Bham has an excellent food scene.
