I am trying to book a flight (I do not fly often) for October and I am looking for the best way to book a flight.

Is it better to go directly to the airline websites or through a Kayak type of site?

Any help is appreciated.

Google Flights

If your dates are flexible you can use the calendar to find the cheapest dates to fly.

Then also check Southwest directly since their flights don't show up in the Google Flight results.

I usually research flights through Trip Advisor and click on the Expedia link to book them.

I always book direct with airline. But search for best flight options through Google Flights then visit airline.

Don’t forget to search Southwest direct if it’s a short domestic flight. They don’t advertise fares on 3rd party sites.

I use Google Flight Matrix to find flights. You can filter down your results to find exactly what you're looking for. I think it uses similar software as the Google Flights link above with different features. Search Southwest directly on their website.

Google Flight ITA Matrix

I recommend always booking directly with the airline.

I found this new website a while back. It combines all airlines to find the cheapest flight anywhere worldwide. The interactive map is really nice to use.

Great Escape

You can also download it as a phone app.

Booking direct with the airlines gives a higher priority with your ticket. You can potentially not get a seat assignment booking with a 3rd party for example.

Use Google to search/track prices and book direct. If you prefer to search through other means that's reasonable ALWAYS book direct, unless you somehow get some insane deal on a package not to. Trust me, any change/delay etc. you'll be glad you went direct.

Note: SW doesn't show prices on Google or 3rd party sites.
