Have been on both Viking Ocean and River cruises. Ocean cruise ship was smaller than Princess ship. Other than size, both had very good "hotel/restaurant" experiences. Viking target cruisers are 50+ year old Americans. Other English speaking travelers were present.

Viking River cruises are fabulous. Same traveler targets.
190 or less travelers on board. Lounge acts only, no theater. Have not been on Christmas cruise, but we intend to do one in a few years.

My preference is a Viking cruise over other major lines. Everyone's preference is drive, somewhat, by why you travel. I am more of a history and culture guy. Some people are the hotel and entertainment types. Understand your type. It helps with selecting cruises and cruise line.

Just got back from a NCL cruise. The buffet was good but there were 4 other complimentary restaurants. All were very good. Steak, seafood, hibachi and Italian were premium but most of the packages give you 2 speciality dinning meals. Best cruise food I’ve had.

So, the consensus is what cruise line has the best food options? I thought it was about destinations and visiting numerous interesting places.

Can you add more context to this?

What makes Holland the best for Alaska?

I'm neck deep in Alaskan cruise research right now and hoping to understand more.

only certain cruise lines can go to glacier bay

They an basically go to the same places unless you count the private islands they own. Like Labadee and Coco Cay.

How about Viking Cruise Lines? Surprised no one has mentioned them yet I have been “told” they are excellent and considering a Christmas cruise through Europe next December.

They're great but not a mass market line by any means. Just depends on what you're looking for but I had zero complaints with Viking.

Definitely an older clientele and no kids...which can be a good thing but don't expect to see any talent at the pool

Do all their ships have a similar setup as far as food choices?

Yes, for the most part. There are some ships that have different options (Harmony has Wonderland for example. Not all have Playmakers or the BBQ joint that, etc) but for the most part the dining is pretty consistent.

Coco Cay.

Better than Castaway Cay in my opinion.

CoCo Cay is great.

Our last cruise on Royal was in October. Compared to previous cruises on Royal ships, the food outside of the specialty restaurants was not up to their usual standards. We gave them the benefit of the doubt, as the ship was just now getting back into service following the Covid pandemic. We cruise again in August on a France and Italy itinerary. Should be fine.

On NCL there is a buffet and one dining room every where else cost extra money.

This isn’t even close to accurate. NCL Breakaway has the buffet, noodle bar, the bar and grill which has amazing wings, Savor, Taste, The Manhattan room. These are all complimentary and you can sit and eat for as long as you want.

The Breakaway and Epic are supposed to be nice. I really want to do the San Juan rt on the Epic. I sailed NCL out of NOLA twice on the Dawn I think both times.

The breakaway just had a refit in 2020.
My last ncl cruise was 15 or 16.
Maybe it's better. As others have slid in food.

I remember being bored but liking the food in the extra pay places especially the steak house.

Epic
I went on the maiden voyage of the flashiest new ship on the seas on a Transatlantic crossing from Southampton to New York.

It wasn’t the Titanic although we left from the same pier the Titanic left from.

It was the Norwegian Epic and it was the nicest ship I have ever been on.

Disney does very well with offerings for either Family or lone Adults. Segmented areas where children aren’t allowed. Drink tastings, several bars and clubs, and the majority off off ship excursions are tailored to adults rather than kids

Disney Cruise Line concierge level is pricey, but it is a fantastic experience.

VERY pricey, but if you have the extra cash to splurge, definitely do it.

The issue will be...you won't want to cruise any other way again on Disney.

Princess and Holland had this excursion when I went and is limited to 150 people. BTW, it was fantastic. Got to see calving up close with the sounds startlingly exciting. Just a notation for your cruising research.

I think Princess also does Alaska quite well. If you are looking at Alaska, realize that that small boat glacier excursion might only be available in later June or after. It depends on if the winter ice is melted enough for the boat.

I also would recommend a sailing with Glacier Bay. Not all lines have itineraries that go there.

I pretty much feel the same as everyone about Carnival. It's not that I'd never go, but it would be a short little Mexico weekend from Galveston and never a big trip.

The Breakaway out of Nola was a good experience. Did it last year with no complaints. This was when they were about 1/2 capacity because of Covid and the amount of people on the ship was ideal. Never felt crowded but also never felt empty either.

I'm a fan of NCL.

No set dining times so you essentially have the freedom to do as you please. I also like how with their "Free at Sea" promo they have been doing your alcohol is already included in the fare and you don't have to pay a fee per day like RCCL. On most of their ships the buffet, the dining rooms, and the 24/7 pub is included free of charge and their specialty restaurants do cost extra. However with their Free at Sea promo you get 2 meals essentially paid for at the specialty restaurants (up to a certain price I believe).
