Flying MSY to Charleston the weekend of the LSU /South Carolina game. Will have 2.5 free days to explore the area. Will be me , my mom, & my 6yr old son. What’s a good area to stay in that’s easily accessible to everything but not right in the thick of Charleston. I want to be able to easily park my car and really don’t want to spend a fortune on a hotel. So far I see some good deals on hotels in the Charleston Riverview/West Ashley area, Daniel Island , and Mt Pleasant. Also , some good food/activity recs suitable for the aforementioned ppl going with me would be helpful as well. Thanks in advance.

Mt. Pleasant is an easy drive across the Ravenel Bridge into downtown Charleston. Only issue can be finding parking in town.

Mt. Pleasant also gives easy access to I-526 which takes you to I-26 for the drive to and from Columbia.

We always stay on Isle of Palms in one of the condos there so we also have beach access, but not sure if you would want that... just depends on what weekend the game is.

I would rather stay in the middle of Charleston where I can walk to everything. Charleston is a manageable city and I never found parking to be a major problem.

I like to stay at the Vendue.

I have also stayed at the Francis Marion which is on the campus of the College of Charleston, still within walking distance to the town center, but a few blocks off the beaten path. There is a parking garage next to the building.

Just booked a trip to Charleston. Got hotel reservations at Mills House based on various recommendation here. Looks to be solid hotel in a central location.

If you want to save some coin and have space for your car, Mt. Pleasant is probably a good option. Quick hop across the bridge to/from Charleston.

Appreciate the replies. I think I’m gonna book the Cambria hotel in mt pleasant for 130/night. 4.6 on Google and 9.4 on Expedia. Looks to be in a good spot and close enough to everything.

Normally this would be what I’d do but I’m going to Switzerland for 10-11 days in early June and then a cali coast trip for 10-11 days late June/early July. Really trying to keep cost down on this one as it is primarily a football trip with seeing some of what Charleston area has to offer as lagniappe. Even the cheapest hotels right in Charleston are 220-250/nt and most are in the 300-700/nt range. that’s more than I’m really wanting to shell out for this particular trip. Esp since I’m needing it four 4 nights.

What activities in the area would yall recommend ? Thinking maybe a ferry to fort Sumter and a horse carriage tour around town to see the major sites. Never been to the area so looking forward to checking it out.

Definitely do a historical tour downtown. The Ft Sumpter trip is fun for views and history.

Thanks for the rec.

Also want to add that if any of you Louisiana folk are looking to make this trip flights are very reasonable currently. I was able to get 3 round trip tickets with decent times on AA for 517$ total. Delta came in around 650 total. Breeze airways will be dropping those dates soon nonstop and they will prob ring in around 125-180 per round trip . The AA flights layover in charlotte and delta in Atlanta. Just a heads up.

Given the requirements, Mt. Pleasant was the right choice. Easy access to downtown Charleston, right by Shem Creek which you definitely need to check out, and closer to the Sullivan's Island and Isle of Palms beaches if you want to do a full or partial beach day.

ETA: Looks like the Cambria is pretty far out in Mt Pleasant. If you can get further west and closer to the Shem Creek. There's a cluster of hotels at the base of the Ravenel Bridge on the Mt P side that are worth a look.

Ft. Sumter is a good idea, as is the downtown tour. Go park down by White Point Gardens and walk along the Battery... great views of the harbor and some of the houses on the south end of the peninsula.

Your 6yo might enjoy the aquarium. Since you are staying in Mt. Pleasant you are close to Patriots Point and the USS Yorktown museum ship. It is probably a lot for a 6yo to see the whole ship, but he might like the planes up on the flight deck.

I have stayed in Mount Pleasant at Isle of Palms, downtown Charleston and at Kiawah Island. My preference is Kiawah. Downtown Charleston is 25-30 minutes away but it is a nice pretty drive from Kiawah. I’m not sure about cost though. A friend has a condo there

Kiawah is my go-to. It’s more like 40-45 mins.

It depends on what you value more...if you want a beach vacation with some history and culture thrown in, stay out that way. If you value the history and culture and all that comes with it, stay closer to downtown and head out to the beach one day.

Though I would say for those who are looking for mostly a beach vacation, you can achieve that for a lot less elsewhere than the Charleston area and its 4 beach islands.
