I'm thinking about booking a trip to Banff in the early weeks of October.

1. The Park is currently closed, but would you anticipate that things would be open by then?

2. Weather wise, would October be a bad time to go? I'd hate to risk it a go during a blizzard ultimately making the hikes miserably or trails closed.

Yes.

Its the wet season. I would worry about rain more than blizzards.

As long as you prepare for cold and wet, it should be fine. Some trails might be closed.

Where are the best places to stay to explore BNP? I have seen photos of the Lake Louise Fairmont, anything else nearby?

I would argue that the shoulder seasons (Spring and Fall) are better times to visit due to smaller crowds. If you go prepared with crampons, snow shoes, warm clothing, and rain gear, it could be very rewarding. One of my favorite vacations was Alaska in early May.

October I see an incredible time to go. There's something almost spiritual about about late fall in the big northern parks.

What about the weather? It seems unpredictable.

It can be. Believe that's the wetter season in the mountains. Early October you can expect about a 50% chance of cloud cover, but the clear days are spectacular and the cloudy days are moody. I doubt you'll see snow ion the valley floors.

It's why I mentioned August.

A lot of folks on this board aren't looking for the colder unpredictable weather.

I can do any weather (besides it being bloody hot and humid, I'm good) but I'm not everyone.

August is the best weather month but it also means it'll be busy with people.

If I were to go when there's less people it would be after school starts in Sep. The good weather is still holding a bit and there's less people.

Early in the year trails are snowed in (others can be snowed in til July on a good snow year). Most people here aren't looking to rent crampons and other gear to go get into the "shite".

We did early July and got awesome weather and tons of snow melt making those rivers active and crazy blue.

If you go the weekend of Calgary Stampede the crowds in Banff will be low....it was nice.

You can get great weather from Spring to Fall. Counting on it from a distance with flights/hotels is another thing.

You're close so it's easy to pick up and visit.

Noice....I love nature.

I'm ready to be out in it again.

You’ve given some kick arse advice on this board. I think Roger The Shrubber and PNW also live up that way.

You guys think Banff will be back open by early/mid July? Have flights to Seattle for an Alaskan cruise. We're thinking if the cruise gets cancelled than we would rent a car and road trip up to Banff area if possible. It's a 10.5 hour drive but we have like 8 days and it seems like it would be an awesome drive.
