Backpack Recommendations (Personal Item)

I’ve gone down the backpack rabbit hole and I’m looking for recommendations on a comfortable backpack that would pass as a personal item on a flight. We’ve used my wife’s old school backpack for the last 10+ years and each time we come home from a trip I swear I’m going to replace. It has great storage, just uncomfortable to wear all day.
If I were to purchase something right now it would probably be the Osprey Proxima 30L. The Aero City Pack Pro 2 seems like another good one. Would love to hear any opinions on these if anyone has them!
I recently purchased then Osprey 40L Farpoint that’ll be using as a carry-on, but I’d really like something else for when we fly a budget airline, or just want to carry something a little smaller.

Edit: Not looking to spend more than $250.

Nomatic travel pack, more than $250 but it does go on sale for around there if you’re not in a hurry

I've got 2 Solgaards I origially bought for work trips, but have used on every personal trip since buying. Nice bag. Not a huge amount of room, but still a nice bag for laptop and a few things, plus it looks classy.

How comfortable is the Osprey 26+6 for extended use during the day? Basically as a “I’ve dropped all of my clothes, toiletries, etc. at the hotel and I just need a bag to carry around the misc. items I need to get me through a day” type of situation? I’ve gotten mixed reviews on how comfortable it is past the leaving the airport and dropping the bag off at the hotel point.

I cannot think of one backpack I have that would work for all of my travels. Totally depends on where I would be going and what I would be doing but no way would I spend $200; there's no need. Everything out there at that price point has a dupe, much cheaper that will do the job.
If it's just a travel backpack for airline travel, I wouldn't expect to wear it "all day" so comfort would not be in the top three priorities for me. I would be looking for size, style, storage and versatility. You can find something like that on Amazon for under $40

I understand the sentiment but I am looking for something I can carry all day. I have two young kids and a pack rat wife. So, a backpack is a staple for any travel we do outside of the house.

I have a Gregory Zulu 40L that I've traveled to Europe with several times. Never had an issue with carry-on.

Osprey has a 20L daypack that is decent. Note that when you go from hiking/backpacking packs, typically 36L and larger, you won't have a frame. All shoulder carry. You can always use a low-weight larger pack (less than 3 lbs) and just not fill it up.

Yeah that’s one thing I’ve learned from all of this - I thought I’d be able to find a very comfortable day pack (with the strap around your waste) that also qualified as a personal item, but I’m learning that the strap normally comes with the larger packs with frames that can’t be squished down under a seat.

Depending on the type of trip, and duration, I use the Osprey 26+6 as my carry on or personal bag (sometimes we might check 1 rolling duffle for extended trips). You could. It's comfortable. But it's typically not the daypack we'd use. For just walking around, we bring a collapsable packable backpack.

I use Osprey because I have a friend that works for them and I've either gotten free or discounted ones.
I have a Daylite for day hiking that works great. There are other types.

Awesome - thanks! I’ll check out the Daylight. Yeah I’m looking for a walk around bag - whether that’s in town or a 8-9 hour day hike. Also need something that’ll collapse and could be used as a personal item.
I think the 26-6 would be great but I’ve read that the straps aren’t very comfortable after an hour or two.
Would love the 40L Farpoint but feel like it’s going to be too big for just walking around town, also can’t compress down.

I like mine.
Osprey also makes the packable Osprey Ultralight Collapsible Stuff Pack.
You can just search for "best packable day pack" or similar and find tons of other choices. I do think unless it's your carry on, you get a packable one for day trips. Could also bring back on the plane with trinkets if needed.

Will check that out - thanks! I’ll I’m going to get something collapsible that I can use as a personal item (as much as it pains me because I would love the Farpoint)

I travel with and then hike with/carry around an osprey manta 24L. It has an internal frame and a hip belt which makes it super comfortable to use, and easily fits under an airline seat. It also comes with a water bladder and tube if that’s a plus for you. Mine is 10 years old at least with heavy use and looks new (except for the stains LOL).
I also have an osprey daylite but as noted without the frame it’s not that comfortable to carry around all day
