Just been thinking about this recently and some of the freedom it would provide to just pick up and go on a weekend. Would need it to sleep 3-4.

Don’t buy, rent. But if you must buy, buy used

Great lifestyle if you like the outdoors and what it provides.

You have to consider a number of things.

1. Storage (preferable covered, the sun really does a number on them)
2. It takes time once your at your destination to get it how you want it. It's more difficult than a hotel or cabin or whatnot, but worth it IMO
3. Towing, if you don't have a vehicle to handle it, you'll need one
4. Your family needs to travel easily to make the travel to and from reasonable (my wife struggles in the car more than 2 hours unless she's able to sleep)

Overall, it's a great hobby. The Texas state parks pass is also worth every dollar.

We recently sold our teardrop for a nice profit and currently don't have anything because we're expecting our first kid. Once the baby is a few months old and we're ready to get out some more I'll buy something we can grow into a bit.

I do have a covered storage option. Full sized Tundra. What’s the biggest I can pull?

A big factor is just saying in a Friday afternoon, let’s go. Seems like renting would make this more challenging.

For a bumper pull I personally wouldn't want to go over ~30ft. That's a lot of shite dangling back there.

That said, just look up your specs for what the tundra can handle and stay well under that. If it says you can tow 9,000 pounds, that is maximum. Try to stay 10-20% under that IMO.

Furthermore, if you're going to drag it out west over mountain passes, that weight is heavy going up, and feels even heavier stopping coming down. Just keep it in mind.

It takes a little more planning than that. Any good camping spots, especially state parks in Texas will be 100% full. Especially if you're looking for full hookups. You can make plans early in the week and sometimes get lucky.

Challenging and expensive. Usually they tack on an extra day because you can't drop it off until Monday (now you have to deal with it on Monday), require it to be cleaned, and do not allow dogs if you have them. I 100% recommend getting a cabin rather than renting a camper.

I was looking at some in the 22-25’ range. Nothing too big. I’m obviously very early in my research but I liked the look of this one. RV Trader

I was just telling my wife we would need it big enough to have enough space for the dog to sleep.

Thanks for all the input boudini

Oh yea, you'll be fine sub 25' with your truck.

That's a nice camper. Personal preference, I don't really care for the Murphy bed design. Last thing I need is crawling in after some whiskey to have to drop the bed down. I try to limit the tasks necessary for me to enjoy my time out there.

Here is our old teardrop at Grand Lake Colorado.

Love that tear drop. If we like the rv life might be something the wife and I downsize to after our 9 year old moves out.

Do you have to pay sales tax on a used travel trailer in Louisiana?

I rented an airstream on Outdoorsy, $150/ nite. He had the receiver and electric brake controller, all I had to do was sweep it out, didn't charge me to dump it. His advice, never buy unless you are close to full timing. They are too expensive especially now.

This. I also know many folks who bought travel trailers and ended up not using them nearly as much as they thought. The trips take a reasonable amount of planning as the best campgrounds/state parks stay fairly booked. Most of the best ones in Texas require reservations months ahead. It all just turned out to be more work than they envisioned and their kids had weekend activities, so it wasn't as easy as just picking up and going to the nearby lake for the weekend. They all sold them after 2-3 years.

Think about storage--can you park it at your house, or will you be renting a storage spot for it? Not a fan of these things--mostly because they limit your rambling to a reasonable driving distance. I'd rather have the freedom to fly around the country than be stuck visiting nearby places. Do the math and see how many $300-$450 flights you can take for half the cost of a travel trailer.

We recently bought a Grand design imagine and have been really enjoying it. It’s 34’ total length with a dry weight of 7k, I’m pulling with F150 3.5 Ecoboost. If you have kids, I’d go with a
Bunkhouse model.

We saved 10k buying used (2021) so id highly recommend that.

It’s awesome being able to load up and go for cheap. I booked a state park next weekend for $60.. hard to beat that.

Renting is not a good option unless you plan to use it only few times a year. We had friends recently try to rent one to come meet us and it was $200 a night plus $295 delivery fee.

Nice. I owned a trailer before. I now own a truck camper. I miss the space for storage but I also enjoy pulling my boat or waverunner.

Not being able to haul a toy was the main reason to switch. I don't regret it at all. We use it a lot.

We save a bit on Air Bnb and hotels when we travel locally because now I just bring the camper.

Yeah bringing the golf cart along is something I’ll need to figure out. Guess I’ll be teaching the wife to tow a small trailer with it. I’m parking my trailer In grand isle until October but once fall rolls around, we’re gonna be in the state parks allot.

Enjoy your camper. I have a 5th wheel that we love. We drop it off at the lake for weeks at a time and then take the fishing boat and 2 jet skis out. Hell of a good time.

My wife can drive and back up a trailer, I am just now getting around to trusting my 17 year old step daughter to tow my stuff.

I have 3 trucks, and 2.5 drivers but the boat, jet skis, a 5th wheel, a side by side and a 4 wheeler so if I take everything then I have to take multiple trips.
