Anybody ever been accused of stealing a Hertz Rental Car?

Hadn’t heard about this but I use Hertz for business travel. I recall 3 or 4 instances weeks after the car was returned where I received a notice that I had failed to turn in my rental when I’d actually returned it early (I always add an extra day to the initial rental period to be sure I get it back within the rental window). Called in to the local office and also the corporate number and was always told just a paper work issue and not to worry about it.

Hertz is in the midst of an ongoing lawsuit in bankruptcy court over claims by more than 100 customers that they were falsely arrested and in some cases spent months in jail for driving cars they had legally rented.

In this week's hearing, Shore, a partner at White & Case, argued, "It is a fraction of 1 percent of annual police reports that are filed that turn into actual litigation claims." That number, of course, does not count customers who were falsely arrested but accepted an early settlement from Hertz, resolved the matter in arbitration, or simply decided they didn't have the funds or the stamina for a lawsuit. Shore added, "We actually think the number of legitimate claims that arise out of annual rentals is a tiny, tiny, tiny, tiny, tiny, tiny fraction."

More than 180 Hertz customers are suing the car rental company in bankruptcy court, seeking damages of just under $529.7 million. Most of these customers were stopped by police, and sometimes arrested, for driving Hertz cars that they had legally rented. According to their filings, for years Hertz has falsely reported that its cars were stolen as part of its regular business practice, "ensnaring its customers in accusations of car theft, throwing them in jail on felony charges, prosecuting them, burdening them with criminal records that impact their livelihoods, and separating them from their family and loved ones."

Asked for comment, Hertz said it would respond to the filings shortly. In the meantime, a company representative referred me back to Hertz's original statement about the lawsuit. You can find that statement in its entirety in this piece. In brief, Hertz said that it cares about its customers and successfully provides tens of millions of vehicle rentals each year. It added that most of the cases at issue involved renters who were "many weeks or even months overdue returning vehicles and who stopped communicating with us well beyond the scheduled due date."

Sounds like he managed to get it resolved in that case.
No experience with Hertz other than a rental in Mexico a year ago, where they tried to charge me for damage that was on the car at pickup (Pics FTW). Everything else is done through National.

I know the agencies all offer after hours return but I've always been too worried to do that. I want to get something showing I returned the car.

Don't know why anybody would ever rent from Hertz again after this. I mean anybody, for any reason. If I were Hertz, I would change the name and colors.
I've been hardcore Enterprise for years, and their service (with the exception of two shady branches, downtowns Chicago and Saint Louis) is A++.
