So I'm looking at flights to Cancun for an upcoming Isla Mujeres trip, and the combo of getting there and back with Spirit and Frontier is $250 less per ticket than United, Southwest, or any other airline. Multiply that by several tickets and the savings are undeniable.

I've never flown either and have also read the 'horror' stories about how terrible they are.

For this type of fare difference, should I just suck it up and do it? Looking for thoughts and opinions from those that have flown either airline recently.

You have to pay to check a bag
You have to pay for a carry on
You have to pay to switch your seat
There is no food or beverage
Seats can be a bit smaller (think basic economy seats)

If you are ok with this then you will be fine. I've never had a bad experience and would take them almost mo they when they had the RT to Dallas under $50.

They do have more direct flights from CUN as well, which is worth the savings to me. You can always upgrade your seat and check bags in advance etc. Your co-passengers will likely be a rougher crowd but may be worth the savings. The big downside of Spirit (assuming you know the extra fees in advance) is if your flight is canceled, you're probably screwed. They don't have the extra planes that other airlines do. If you have the option to book say a SW flight on points and cancel once your Spirit flight is about to take off so you have a good backup plan.

If you're flying with complainers, don't do it.
If you're just getting from point A to B, it's a value.

It's like getting a steak at Ruth Chris vs. Applebee's.

You get what you pay for, don’t expect great service, and expect trashier passengers. If you fine with that then it’s ok

I have flown spirit 8 times in the last year or so and each time i fully expect walmart level fights, lost bags, cancelled flights etc. Each time i walk off the plane thinking that it was actually the most plesant flying experience Ive had in a while. I do pay for the big seat which makes a difference.

Great info all, much appreciated.

Given it is a shorter flight (approx 2 hours) I think it’ll be tolerable.

I flew Spirit to Newark around thanksgiving and they were serving snacks and drinks. You can buy a bundle where you can pick your seat, include a checked bag and do priority boarding I think. The seats are a little smaller and less comfortable but it’s fine for shorter flights.

Spirit is not that bad. I flew them in September from LAX to Las Vegas then from Vegas to New Orleans. After the UCLA game flights to MSY were cancelled because of the hurricane so we solved that problem by going to Vegas for 3 days. The biggest complaint was that they charged for every little carryon. Plan your packing accordingly and it will be fine. I like their non stops from MSY, especially to Vegas.

Mostly bullshite from dysfunctional type people that like to complain, or don't know what's up. These are ultra-low-cost airlines with a la carte type service. Great business model.

I don’t mind Frontier at all. Yes the rate is a base rate but they have a bundle that you can do a carry-on and one check bag. I’ve never had a problem with them

We recently flew direct from MSY to Las Vegas. Family of 4. I did pay to choose seats. Add that cost to checking bags and it was roughly $300 more each way but it was still a ton cheaper. Flights were on time. No problems and would fly again.
