Has anyone been to the southern Italy coast / Sicily in the off season?

Are the restaurants and shops all open or does the area close down? I am looking at March or possibly late October for next year.

We spent a week in Positano the week before Easter 2014. . They consider Easter to be the beginning of the season. Some restaurants and hotels open for the season on Easter but plenty enough were open.
The good news is that it was not that crowded.
The weather was nice much of the time but we had a little rain and a couple of days of cool, foggy drizzle.

We loved it and I would not hesitate to go back at that time. The summer can get crowded with tourists.

What do you do in Positano for a week in Spring?

October would be a much better choice than March. The ferries shut down if there's chop and the likelyhood of that happening is much breat when the colder seasons are in place.

We went in early October of 2018 and there was one day the ferries were not running.

Lots.
We took several day trips by ferry up and down the coast, once to Capri and twice to the town of Amalfi, during one of which we rode to the top of the small mountain to Ravello, which was gorgeous.

We had delicious dinners every night in restaurants ranging from fancy Michelin starred places to family run pizza places just down the road from where pizza was invented.

Our hotel room in the Villa Gabrisa had a large private terrace overlooking the Mediterranean. Spectacular view.

I can't wait to go back.

ETA- I just checked my notes. We were there April 13-19, 2014. Easter Sunday was April 20 that year, so we were not there in Marck. By the week before Easter, most, but not all places were open for the season.

Sounds good. I figured that was the case. Use Positano as a base for other spots. And eat locally.

We were there for a few days and enjoyed it but said while we were there that a few days is enough.

I went in Feb. Stayed at Hilton in Sorento. Day I got there was carnival. They had a parade through town and fireworks. Good base but not nearly as busy as summer. Took ferry to Capri which was pretty much shut down. Took public bus down a Amalfe coast to positono. Also took train to Pompeii. Good time to go. Not as crowded and much cheaper than high season. View from room overlooking Sorento and the bay was spectacular.

We went to positano in march. Only 3 restaraunts open and most of the shops were closed. Cool to explore but nothing going on, so I wouldn’t make a whole trip out of it. If you did a day in each town it could work

Still incredibly beautiful

We went to Positano in June. We rented a boat (Gazza boat) with a captain for two full days. We spent most of the time outdoors and in the water. I couldn’t imagine going there when it’s not summer. I never felt crowded while there. Venice and Rome definitely felt more crowded. I highly recommend the boat rental plan. We went down the coast stopped wherever we wanted, explored caves and beaches, and just enjoyed the water both days.
