Some family friends and my wife have begun the process of planning an all-inclusive beach resort vacation. Between us, we'd also be bringing several kids from 5 to 13. They're looking at Atlantis, Turks and Caicos, Punta Cana, etc.

I'm more inclined to stay stateside, and have mentioned Key West as an alternative.

Do you guys have any suggestions on why they'd make more sense over staying in the US. I've never been to the Keys but heard it's incredible. And to be honest, caribbean islands make me a little nervous.

Thoughts?

Why? THe islands you've listed are considered very safe. Plus you'll on a resort.

Yeah I know. I'm really kind of being weird about it. I just keep remembering back to 2 or 3 stories this year where Americans are found dead in hotel rooms due to carbon monoxide poisoning or other 3rd world type bullshite. I think they were all in Mexico though.

Typically, Atlantis is not all-inclusive to my knowledge and is pretty pricey (maybe you can buy a package but it isn't an "all-inclusive resort" as you would typically think).

PC has many nice all-inclusives and you really don't leave the resort. Its nice.

The Keys are awesome but they aren't really a "beach" destination. While some of them do have beaches, many do not. Key West barely has any to speak of (although they do have some small beach areas).

I view the Keys more as a couples destination than one with several kids.

Key West may be an alternative but they are very very different in terms of what they offer. The middle and upper keys are much better for families in my opinion rather than key west and if beaches is what is desired, The Keys are not your answer at all. It's great for boating, fishing and the likes but definitely not a relax pool / beach / golf vacation with a day trip or two planned. Every day is a day trip.

Gotcha. Well it doesn't necessarily have to be the Keys. Any other US options (St Thomas, Virgin Islands, etc) are also an option. Something that scratches that "exotic" itch while still having things like OSHA around, if that makes sense :)

If you're going to the USVI go to St. John.

Not Atlantis. Rundown and overpriced.

This couple does even handed video reviews on all-inclusives. They don’t have kids, but have several reviews on resorts in the DR:

This guy mostly focuses on Vegas, but he did a run through of resorts in Punta Cana and Cabo as well:

If you have never been to the Keys then a middle Keys family vacation with a day trip or two to Key West is a fantastic vacation with middle aged kids.

Given that, its a lot different then an "all-inclusive".

Given that, I never understand talking "all inclusive" with kids because kids are generally cheap as far as food and activities go. At least a lot cheaper then adults. So including it all doesn't really save money IMO. My point is just, don't exclude a beach resort for kids that's not all inclusive.

I dont think of the Keys as a beach vacation. It's a great place to get out in a boat. The sandbars are great and we do that all the time. There is more sand in the Upper Keys but certainly not the lower Keys. People that live in the Keys vacation in BVI or T&K.

Just find a kid friendly all inclusive in Mexico. They’re all the same and you can get a direct to Cancun.

Thats a stretch...not everywhere flies direct to Cancun. I also don't agree that they are all the same. There are definitely places that cater more to large groups, consisting of families with teens as opposed to say couples with no kids.

We just took our 1st trip to the Keys over Thanksgiving
(family of 6 - me/wife/19yo/16yo/13yo/9yo)Tuesday-Saturday

We stayed halfway on Duck Island in a VRBO next to Hawks Kay resort(no use of resort with our unit)

We flew into Ft. Lauderdale and rented a car and drove down from there.

Some of the things we did:
Haulover Inlet
South Beach
Quick Everglades boardwalk trail
Key West
Small family pontoon fishing/riding charter in Marathon

Overall Impression:
Rent a boat or have a friend with a boat there(rentals are cheap)
Other than Key West your options are basically fishing, snorkeling or eating fish!
Key West was great - kids enjoyed it the most. Its a very clean and safe version of the French Quarter. We werent there late into the night so not sure how rowdy it gets...most we saw were the novelty shops that kids saw a few words passing by(once again - similar to walking on Bourbon st. so not a huge surprise)

The atmosphere down there is great...like living in a jimmy buffet song everywhere you go.

We are not dying to go back, but said if we did we would definitely have to rent a boat to make it more fun and enjoyable. It was an easy drive from Ft. Lauderdale airport and puts us in some islands in 5 hours from New Orleans!

Wife and I have been to key west, if we were to do it again we would stay in the middle keys and do a one day trip to key west. This past June we went to Hyatt ziva Cancun all inclusive and absolutely loved it. Join there Facebook group and scroll through the pictures and comments. Most destinations have Facebook groups where you can learn alot
