Thank you those are great ideas with just getting the stuff at the destination. We clearly don’t want to be those parents that ruin the flight for everyone else.
My daughter in law and others that I know as well traveled with a baby. They did fine and no, the babies don't usually cry the whole time or even that much. Try to plan your trips around nap time if possible. You'll be good if you plan well. Don't listen to the folks who don't want a baby traveling. It's just as much your right as anyone else's.

Bottles are fine. Take the bottles out of the bag and TSA will run them in some small machine. Not exactly sure what it looks for. Either way, its fine, just takes an extra few minutes getting through security.

And definitely pack the biggest, most unwieldy stroller you can, and learn how to fold it while you're putting your bags on the X ray belt. That is always a crowd pleaser.

If my wife and I have Pre Check can we still go through pre check with the baby?

I remember when we flew with our little one for the first time, and we had Pre Check too. TSA let us all go through together, including the baby, which honestly made things so much easier. The security process was way quicker since we didn’t have to deal with removing shoes or unloading a bunch of things from the baby bag, just the bottles for scanning. Definitely helped reduce the stress. By the way, if you’re also prepping for things like a baptism or looking for a special keepsake, there are some really nice personalized options out there for families. I came across some thoughtful ones on https://lovia.ro/ that focus on custom baptism supplies and gifts.

Others already answered you regarding the formula, so I'll just give you some tips for flying with your infant. IMO, 5 months is the perfect age to fly with babies. After 6 months old it gets a little bit more difficult.
Change diaper as close to boarding as possible. Diaper changing in airplane bathrooms is challenging. Get a bottle ready and when the plane starts to take off, start a feed. Feed them all the way through the ascent if possible. This does two things; 1) prevents their ears from popping, 2) they'll likely fall asleep right after. Bring a pillow with you on the plane and just place the baby on the pillow so you can rest your arms for the flight. When the plane starts its descent, feed again. Pacifiers also help if the bottle doesn't last for the entire ascent / descent. Don't stress and enjoy! It only goes downhill from here.

Yeah and if they're eating puffs or similar at this point, bring a bunch or buy something similar. Dole them out slowly. You're living life in 90 second increments and waiting for them to fall asleep.
At that age for us it was always like 25 minutes of nervously guarding against them becoming inconsolable and then an hour or two of mostly peaceful sleep. Between the three of them (including twins) I can really only remember one flight around that age where someone wouldn't sleep.
Dozens of flights with infants/toddlers and the kind words from strangers vs. nasty looks are like 100:1. The overwhelming majority of people will give you plenty of grace if you're doing your part.

I just flew from NYC to Catania behind a couple who just had to bring their baby to Sicily. I wanted to murder them. SCREECHING. shite smell. Seat bouncing for burping.
It’s so selfish.
It’s so selfish.

You choose, every day, to be a miserable arse that feels put upon by everyone around you. Do better.

There is absolutely zero reason to bring your nonverbal, non potty trained, non walking, child on a trans Atlantic flight to Europe. I’m not sorry. There was a time in our country when that was considered obvious. Babies don’t belong everywhere.
