Enjoy it. Just walking around looking at things was fun for me. It's a hectic, old city. One of my favorite places in the world. A few notes:

- the traffic is like something out of a fricking science fiction novel, brace yourself

- the Sistine chapel is the most incredible thing I've ever seen in person and there really isn't a close second. When you look up and see the ceiling and the enormity of it all sinks in, there's nothing like it.

- the food is good, the wine is great, the gelato is better

- prepare to do some walking, but you won't mind because there's always something to see. They don't have the greatest public transit in the world, but it's still pretty good. I found it pretty easy to get around and the language barrier wasn't as bad as I imagined it would be.

Soak it in and have fun, man.

For a super personal experience contact Tom Shaker for a guided tour.

You wont be disappointed. He met us at the Vatican and spent the day walking us through the museum and St Peter's. From there we walked through the city. He had spots already setup for lunch and dinner and got the real feel for Rome. When we go back I will definitely look him up again

Didn't get through the whole thread but, yes.

I spent 2 weeks there and would go back in a second, despite wanting to travel to other places.

I will never forget the Scala Sancta. It was an unforgettable experience for me.

P.S. you kidding? Its Rome.. Coliseum first and foremost is friggin awesome. Take a train ride through the country side. Its beautiful or at least it was in the early 90's.

Glad this was mentioned. Rome is a very walkable city; you're able to run into cool stuff around every other corner it seems, so you can see a lot in 3 days.

Lots of good suggestions in this thread, so I'll suggest trying to learn a little Italian if you can. In my experiences there, I tried using the Italian I learned at LSU and the locals loved the effort, more so than other cities I've visited. One girl who helped me at a soccer store even kissed my cheeks and said "buon viaggio" when I checked out.

Best day I had was just walking around.
Everywhere you go you run into something else.

Oh and just crossing the street is an adventure all its own.
