I am obligated to attend a wedding in Orlando next weekend and will find myself and my spouse (no pics) having a free day there to attend Universal. She’s a Harry Potter fan. I would sincerely appreciate it if someone would walk me through a best-practices scenario for efficiently spending a day there like I’m 10 years-old.

We are both in wonderful shape, no mobility issues.

TIA

Are you staying at a universal resort and if so, which one?

Me and the gf did Disney and universal last week. Are you planning on doing both adventure island and Hollywood studios?

If so. Get there early and you should be able to knockout almost every ride depending on the crowd. As soon as you get through the gate do all the Harry Potter rides first, theres 3 and they had the longest lines out of every ride when we went. They’re all pretty awesome too. 2 are in adventure island and 1 is in Hollywood

Then I’d do velocicoaster (adventure island) and rockit poppit roller coaster (Hollywood). The only other real long line was minions and that was probly the worst ride out of all of them.

The parks open at 9, we got there at about noon on a Wednesday and it was already pretty slammed and we were only able to get through adventure island. then we went again on our last day which was a Monday and were one of the first ones in line and were able to knock out all of Hollywood studios rides in 3 hours. Get a fast pass if you want to be safe

Top 5 rides IMO:

1. Velocicoaster
2. Harry Potter Hagrids motorcycle roller coaster
3. Harry Potter escape from gringotts
4. Rockit poppit roller coaster
5. Transformers

The only kinda lame ones are King Kong, minions, and fast and furious. The only show we did was the animal show in Hollywood studios and it was ok. Didn’t have time to do the Bourne stuntacular

Also, download the universal app and it will tell you about how long each line is so you know which rides to jump too and where to go.

Perfect...that resort level will give you free express pass which is going to help you. Also, as a resort guest you will get early entry with Universal Early Park Admission

The two most popular rides are not inlcluded in the express pass (Hagrids Motorbike and Velocicoaster) and both of them are MUST DO's and luckily, both are located in Islands of Adventure.

So, this is your best bet.

Plan to start your day at Islands of Adventure and if early admission begins at 8am, you will want to be in line at the park by about 7:15 am so check the early admission times when you check into the resort. Hagrid is not currently running during early admission so your plan should be to head to Velocicoaster first. Some people wlll go directly to Hagrid to line up BUT you have time to knock out Velocicoaster first IF you are really at the turnstyles to the park 45 minutes before adverstised park opening.

As soon as you get off of Velocicoaster, make the short walk to the lost continent area to line up for Hagirds. The line does not start at the attraction but does line up near Poseidon's Fury.

We just did this less than a week ago for an 8 am Early Admission and here was our results.

quote:

We got in line at Islands of adventure about 715. Entered the park went directly to velociicoaster and was off of that by 8:09 AM. Walked over to lost continent and got in line for Hagrid’s at 8:12 and will report back what happens as the plants develop

8:28, line started moving from Lost Continent.
8:45, dropped bags off in locker
Was off the ride and drinking cold butter beer by 9:15

Once you get off off Hagrid, check the wait time to Velocicoaster because it will often peak at park opening, but then immediately drop so you may want to go jump back in line. From then on, for the rest of the day almost everything else you do will have Express Pass so your wait will be mimimal.

My advice would be knock out the rest of Islands of Adventure, lunch at Thunder Falls Terrace (near Kong) then go back to Hoggsmeade using Hoggwarts Express and knock out Diagon Alley (again, using express pass for Escape from Gringotts, etc) and everything else worth a damn. Rip Ride Rock It is on the way out so make sure you do that a couple of times as well to end the day.

A one day park hopper for Universal and Islands is about $200 per person and with express pass and early entry (if you're really there 45 minutes before early entry), I have no doubt you can knock out everything you want to do in both park, including lunch, beers and Hogwarts Express by 4 or 5 pm pm

Another thing I wanted to mention, you really onle need a deluxe resort either the day you plan to go to the parks or night before you plan to go to the parks. You could save money by staying some of the time off site or at another universal resort (Cabana Bay for example) and only moving over to Royal Pacific for when you plan to be in the parks. One thing about those deluxe resorts, everything there will be more expensive than at the moderate resorts. Poolside beers, crappy pizza, coffee in the morning, etc.

And, they are wayyyy more strict about not bringing your own beer or drinks into the pool area so if are going to be at royal pacific the entire time and you can plan a grocery run it will help, but me stealth in the pool area. OR, just be prepared for hefty price tags and I mean like Superdome pricing ($9 bud lights, $15 hamburgers, etc)

Literally just got back. We stayed at Disney and drove to universal that morning. Got there right at 9, left the park at 7 that night. We did almost everything (velocicoaster, King Kong, hulk coaster, and the dr doom drop thing way to scary for the kids). Obviously you’ll need the park hopper for both Harry Potter parts, but if you only have one day, the express pass is a no brainer. No way you’ll do everything you want in one day without it. Hagrid was the only ride that wasn’t covered that we were interested in so you need to prioritize riding it if you want to avoid an hour wait. Also going on the weekend is going to make things that much worse so getting there early could help. We had lunch at The Three Broomsticks. It was decently priced compared to Disney and actually pretty good

Last, if you and your girlfriend are relatively fit like you say, and don’t have kids you are going to have to carry around, avoid the prime parking which is like $35 more. It was worth it for us at end of day, but without my little ones and all of their paraphernalia I’d have been mad at myself for buying it

I'd put Revenge of the Mummy at 5 before Transformers but they just shut down the mummy for an extensive 5 month renovation.

Thanks to you all, this information is going to make me look like I actually cared to her.

Now we have to hope for good weather as we have exactly only one day to visit.

No need for Express passes. You’ll be able to do everything as long as you stick to a plan. Prioritize the rides you want to do.

First response to your thread described exactly what we did. You’re getting good advice here.

Express passes if they still have them are worth the money. We passed the same people 3-4 times that were standing in line on rides. Harry Potter rides are impressive.

Universal is starting to renovate some of their older attractions in preparation for building the new Epic Universe park. The Velocicoaster and Hargrid's Magical Motorbike are hands down two of the best roller coasters I've ever ridden. Both are must rides.

re:Express Passes

I’m too old and impatient to not buy them.

Plus I married a smart woman who will know about them and will remind me that our schedule could have been expedited.

Thanks again to all for the information. I’ll report back following the expedition.

The Mummy is one of the best rides in the park. Since you're staying at a Resort tied to Universal you get free fast passes, use them.

For the ones you can't use a fast pass on, just ride single rider (velocicoaster) For Hagrid...the bike is cooler than the cart. Outside of that with the Fast pass you can hit pretty much everything in a day.

The minions and shrek shows are funny, they pick on someone in the crowd so wear something obnoxious and it will be you.

Last advice I have is ride the Hulk at night. I just think it's such a better ride this way.

Not sure what your budget is, but if you can swing a private tour it's worth every penny, no waits, they feed you all day, tour guide, ride all you want. We just went for Thanksgiving and did the tour. If I can swing it I will do it every time, was worth every penny.

I think the mummy is closed right now till summer for refurbishment and updates

That's unfortunate, hands down one of the better rides in the park. Went over thanksgiving as well at it was open...I didn't know they closed since. When we went they were so busy they closed the regular line and only had virtual que for two days.

Never again will I let my family convince me to go over Thanksgiving. It was just too crowded. They were periodically shutting rides down as well. The Hagrid ride line stretched all the way inside the old Poseidon's Fury auditorium and down the stairs. We went straight there as the park opened too. I'm sure OP won't see that many people during this time of the year.

Try $1,200 because I ain't ever going back.

I went to the Warner Bros Studio Tour in Watford, UK and spent around the same amount for the "Deluxe" tour there.

Not ever going back there either.

Thanks again to those who assisted...I hope for good weather now.
