Going out to Mammoth Mountain in a couple of weeks for the first shredding of the season. My legs and cardio are not ready, but I’m ready for fresh pain and fresh pow.

The trip will be 4 husbands / 4 wives and NO KIDS. We are leaving them all at home. The guys are all type 3 skiers and can go all mountain. Ladies can do blues and usually start apres early afternoon.

TBH, Whistler is right up your alley.

If I had to choose between the 2 with all of your criteria, I'd pick Steamboat.
Big Sky would be better for the men & skiing.
Steamboat is better for the women & apres.
Main difference is cost. Big Sky will run you $1-2k more for lodging.

I just went to Big Sky last year. It's made for people that want to be on the mountain. There is a small central area at the base for apres, but it gets crowded, quickly.
Big Sky is made for people that just want to get a 6-pack and sit in the hot tub after skiing from open to close.
But the terrain can't be beat. There's so much terrain that it's hard to get to all of it in 3-4 days.

Been to steamboat a few times.
It's nicely segmented for skill levels, but you'll run out of new terrain by day 2, definitely by day 3.
However, the base area has lots of places to eat and drink. And then there is also the town a shuttle ride away with even more things to do.
It's a more well-rounded experience.

If one were going to Park city whats the most reasonable dispensary to drive to. Looks like 2.5hrs to closest in Nevada or 3+ to Colorado

Sounds like you've done your homework, but I have Deep Roots in West Wendover at 2:10 from PC. About 1:40 from the airport...

I have been there before, it gets busy (serving all of Utah its weed), so I would order ahead and skip the line. You can also break up the drive on the way back by stopping at the Bonneville Salt Flats if you've never been.

Question though...

If weed is important to you, why not pick one of the 6 states out west that have mountains and legal?

What’s a decent base depth for ski terrain. I keep checking Whistler bc we leave at the end of next week but I don’t know what I’m looking at really. Only showing 40/276 trails open as of today. Hoping by the 18th they’ll have more trails opened up. Thanks in advance.

In my experience, trails open really is the best gauge.
Base depth varies from place to place.

If you're really interested in benchmarking, I use historical snow depth by month to see.
https://www.onthesnow.com/british-columbia/whistler-blackcomb/historical-snowfall

November should have had around 36" snowfall with a average base depth of 17".
December - 71" snowfall and 33" depth.
January - 81" snowfall, 45 base depth, 72" summit depth.

Current season is 60" snowfall with a 27" base depth.
So, it seems to be a better than average year... as it only needs 11 more inches of snowfall all month to hit the average.
You've got 4-10" forecasted over the weekend. With another whole week before your trip.
I'm optimistic for you.

Appreciate the reply and your insight. Also appreciate the optimism. I’ve only skied Colorado and Utah. Really excited for Whistler. Never been to Canada and doing a bday dinner for my wife in Vancouver the night before we drive up with a Christmas lit up capilano suspension bridge. Super excited for all of it.

Thanks for the advice. Ordering ahead will surely save some time. I will say the prices in Colorado are far better so driving the extra time there might be worth it.

Believe me brother, I would have. Only going to Park city cause some high roller friends invited and I get a couple nights free at the Montage in DV.

Bobsledding on an Olympic track is super cool. Look into that.

Do you really live in Michigan? Just bring some stuff in your carry-on bag and save yourself the drives.

The Copper season pass includes a kids (15 and under) pass for each adult purchased. Not a bad deal if you live here and have kids plus only go to Copper.

Ive got a better deal, but thats what I would do otherwise. Got a wife who skis. Got two kids. Math works nicely.

Grew up there and still spend a good amount of time during summer up there. Went to LSU and now work in Louisiana. So that idea won’t work
