Not sure when I’ll be able to go due to a new contract position I’m out starting in two weeks, but Park City, Summit County, and Heavenly/Kirkwood are on the hit list and I WILL get in at least 30 days this season.
Did Kirkwood for the first time last year. It was a powder day but even then it was the best snow I ever skied on. With that being said my main gripe was the lack of signage to show what runs are which. Every other resort has plenty of signs with arrows indicating which runs you are on. Not the case at Kirkwood.
They did avalanche control in waves and opened various parts of the mountain throughout the day... I made the mistake of going to the backside when they opened it and so did everyone else on the mountain. Long lines. Only did one run the backside because of this.
The Wall was a fun one... the lift ride up is intimidating since the only way down are double black runs. That initial drop in took me a few seconds to work up the courage but once you are in it isn't too bad, it was smooth and unmoguled all the way down.
It's definitely a mountain for experienced skiers. Not a lot of intermediate or beginner terrain, but plenty to offer the advanced skier
Also needed chains or 4 wheel drive to get there so keep that in mind - they had workers out in the middle of the highway enforcing this

Have you been there before? Is it worth taking a day off of Park City for?
No but I might as well. The plan is to do 3 days at Park City and 1 at Snowbasin. I am a first chair to last chair skier who takes no breaks at all, so I can get a lot in those 3 days.

Kirkwood doesn’t get mentioned enough. It’s a great place. I haven’t been in awhile and it seems they still haven’t replaced those two fixed lifts to/from the backside.
The backside is great. The wave is really fun when the cornice builds up and there’s a soft landing. Skiers right off the lift has some good runs worth the ~10 minute hike. However it’s very exposed and can get wind blown easily. The doubles over the ridge back to the front side are no joke.
The Wall is the only lift that ever flipped my stomach. I grabbed the seat like a little bitch when the last section went damn near vertical

Still from my GoPro video during my first time down The Wall, looking over the drop in. Video does not do it justice, it was pretty steep. Also another thing that makes it intimidating is when you get off the lift you see a bunch of skull and crossbone flags wavering around. It was really windy the day I was at Kirkwood so you had the spectacle of wildly waving flags, whistling wind and blowing snow everywhere
It was only moguled at the very top, once you got in the moguls went away

The pics never do it justice. If anyone knows how to capture those shots I’m all ears.

I have said a bunch of times that "I NEED TO PLAN A SKI VACATION" but never have. I'll follow along in this thread to figure out a few things. Gotta do it before I get too old. Thanks for starting it.

What’s good spot for a single guy, mid-30’s to go ski for a few days? Never skied

I’m partial to Breckenridge. Great town, with food options and nightlife. Plenty of green (beginner) terrain. Easy access from DIA. That’s my vote.
Park City would be a great choice, too.

Agreed. I’d also add Aspen and Heavenly and Jackson.

We're going to Heavenly for bachelor trip. Not just for skiing, but we like to gamble a bit too. We would have chosen Jackson Hole otherwise.

Park City, Breck, Aspen or Steamboat would all be good. I wouldn't go to Jackson though, not really the most beginner friendly terrian.

Youre looking for nightlife as much as the skiing, since youre going to be struggling one or two runs for the first couple of days.
So if you've heard of the resort, its probably a good bet. In Colorado, Aspen is a long way from Denver in the winter. The Brecks and Vails of the world though...

I'm out this year. Did 14 days at keystone, 2 at breck, and 3 at crested butte while we spent last year in Colorado. Will be back winter of 2022 probably to big sky or park city/deer valley.

You have 3 days to ride/ski. You’re on a budget because you’ve booked other trips. You want somewhere easy to get to, that southwest flies for relatively cheap, all to keep costs down. You can leave on Wednesday and return Sunday. Don’t need a world class resort necessarily but want good snow on good runs with decent variety. Where do you go?

Ski Loveland and stay at the microtel in Georgetown. Can also rent your gear nearby from black diamond ski rental on the cheap(also in Georgetown) . That was a really low cost, quick little ski trip last year. I thought Loveland was solid. We did Loveland and copper on that trip and enjoyed them both very much.

Cool I’ll look into it. I have my own gear or I will before the season starts.
ETA: For any other suggestions, I don’t care about nightlife or a nice lodge or any frills. I just want to be on the mountain and will eat PB&J sammys on the lift. Strictly want good riding.

+1 for loveland. Some good terrain on that mountain and it's relatively cheap ($199 for an unrestricted and transferable 4-pack) and easy to get to. Its tough to beat for the combo of bang/buck/access. I like A-basin better but it's also a little more expensive and a slightly longer drive.

Alright - I need some advice from parents on this thread. Taos was our go to place for family ski trips but it looks like covid is still fricking up the ski school offerings, which used to be awesome for young kids but now don't start until age 6.
Anyone have another kids ski school they like? preferably drivable from DFW and not keystone/breck. Kids will be 4/6.

Loveland, A Basin, Copper. A Basin has the hardest terrain.
