re: 10-14 days in Italy and France

It's doable, but seems to me each is so spectacular you'd still be wanting after 10-14 days in either country, or for that matter, many of the regions. I haven't been to France in years, so my experiences are dated. Have been to Italy 4 times, including twice in the last five years, so:
Trip like that? Wow. So much you could do. I would say at least base in Florence for a week. We stayed in the Florence View Apartments. Took day trips over to Sienna. Did some wine tours in the Tuscany Region. So much to do beyond visiting amazing Florence. Later took a train down to Orvieto. Amazing medieval city on top of a mountain.
Then on to Rome for 5 days. All in all a great trip. But there's so much to do in Italy you'd never get to see and do it all.
Didn't stay here, but learned about it later: Stay in a "Country Villa"?
We did the "Proscecco Road Tour" on another trip and that was great too. Added a week in Slovenia, which is spectacular.
I didn't visit the Dolomites, but a friend that's been to Italy more than me was just raving about how beautiful it was.

Italy and France is too much.
Pick one. Focus on one and you’ll enjoy it more.
Last year we did 4 days in Paris, and we could've spent much more time there.

Rome was a lot better my second trip than my first - needed to find the foodie area by the River that I missed on the first trip

Trastevere is by far the best part of Rome that I experienced.

Any time you can go to Paris you should in my opinion.
A 2 day layover is not going to do the city justice at all. If you're going to do that, my personal opinion would be to act like you will go back to Paris one day. Don't take it as an opportunity to see everything and then never go back.
Spend some time taking the city in and having a great meal or two rather than playing Pokemon and trying to catch em all.

Avoid late Summer in Europe if you can. That is when ALL of Europe MUST take vacation and it can get extremely crowded.
They have a mandatory 2 week vacation from mid-July thru August.
Had to work over there and it took 6 hours to travel from SE france to SW France; normally less than 3 hour trip.

It's when all of southern Europe is just miserably hot and dusty. At least if you visit northern Europe, the weather will be a lot more comfortable.

Yep, name escaped me as I was typing.
Other Rome recommendation...do not stay near Termini...it's sketchy; my brother and I were on edge and we are bigger than everyone in Italy.

I stayed twice on Viminale Hill and had no issues. Also, the US Embassy is ~10 blocks due north on the main road leaving Termini.

Speaking of, I hope there’s a statute of limitations on speeding tickets down there. We were on the coast almost 9 years ago and the vacationers were driving so slow...I must have passed a million cars...got home and the tickets started rolling in. Who knew they timed you between tolls?

I'm always trying to get this point across to friends and on here.
They all think "I'm never going back to Europe, this is it" so they cram it all in.
I had one friend that was literally going to do like a single day in London, Paris, Rome, Florence, Berlin, Amsterdam etc. I was laughing so hard. Finally convinced him just to Italy which is what he really wanted to see, and even to pair that down.
Enjoy your experience. Give yourself some time and stick to one-ish country. My wife likes to cram as much stuff in as possible so its always a balancing act between the two of us.

Yeah. I'm at the point where I just want to rent in an agritourismo or a pizza in Tuscany or Piedmonte and spend a week living like a local and visiting vineyards here and there.

My husband spent 3 weeks in France, and even though he was working, it was not enough time - it will never be enough time.
Paris deserves at least 3 days. It’s nice just to walk around and not do anything.
I’ve never been to Italy - but I’ve known plenty of people who have gone. One of my friends went to Venice and she said she never wanted to come back.

For me, it's a question of whether or not I know that I want to spend a long time in one place.
When I went to Argentina last March, right before the pandemic, I was down there for 10 nights and spent them in 7 different hotels and made 6 local flights once I was down there. It was a great trip, and now, if and when I go back, I'll know where I want to spend more time.
But I'm generally of the opinion that it's a big world with lots to see, so I don't go back to places that often.
