My wife and I are headed to Napa for a few day. We are spending a Friday night and all day Saturday/ Saturday night in SF. What should we do?

We like to sight see and try new foods. We are staying next to the Dragon Gate to Chinatown.

I took a bus tour of the area, very informative and you get to see all the sights. Alcatraz if you have time. Fisherman's wharf for food. It will be cold after 3 PM, bring a jacket and hat. The wind comes inland off of the ocean at about that time every day and the temperature drops drastically.

Walk across the Golden Gate. If I could only do one thing there that’s what I’d do.

I'll copy and paste what I threw into a thread last month:

quote:

I'm there every few weeks for work.

- Plenty of good tacquerias in Mission. Also, plenty of weirdos. Few dispensaries line Mission, if you're into that.

- Noe Valley is a great neighborhood to walk around. Clean, safe and a number of boutique shops, restaurants and bars.

- Hog Island in Embarcadeo has great oysters, but a couple dozen and a couple drinks per person adds up quick.

- Favorite spots for dim sum are Good Mong Kok, China Live and City View. Couple other good Chinese spots are Z & Y and Begoni Bistro.

- If you're looking for a good lunch / sandwich, highly-recommend Lunchpad and Deli Box.

- State Bird in Fillmore is very good. Small plates, inventive dishes, sometimes can be pretty veggie forward.

- Favorite beer bars are Toronado (conveniently located next to a great Ramen spot called Iza Ramen), Crafty Fox (you'll get some weirdos walking by, so makes for good people watching), Church Key, Monk's Kettle, Beer Hall, City Beer Store (guys will give you tastings of cans they crack in shop), and Hopwater.

- I prefer to sit at the beer bars, so I haven't checked all that SF proper has to offer, but I make it a point to stop at the following: Cellarmaker (spots to sit go quickly), Barebottle (I take red eyes from SFO, so I'll stop here for an hour or two after my last meeting), Almanac (same deal as Barebottle), Black Hammer and 21st are close by (really not a fan of the atmosphere at 21st - feels like a restaurant), and Black Sands (nearby Toronado).

- Quite a few cocktail bars worth checking out in Tenderloin, but know where to walk after dark. Not the most comfortable scene.

- Swan Oyster Depot is a great place for seafood. Cash only, very limited number of seats, but it is very, very good.

- SOMA StrEat Food Park isn't near much, but plenty of seating and around a dozen food trucks.

ETA: There are a lot of good options in Inner Richmond, too. I don't, typically, venture over there, but the board's recommendation had me at Burma Superstar a couple Sundays ago for dinner. It was awesome.

One thing I'd do is go to Lands End park and watch the sunset.

Brandy Ho’s is a few blocks up from there. Really good hunan. The dumplings are great.

Tadich Grill is close too for fresh seafood. Great clams and pacific oysters. I know, sacrilege, but they’re good. They have a whole menu without a bad item on it.

Toronado as mentioned is a great beer bar. Great prices too.

Hi Dive under the bay bridge is a nice divey spot with a cool patio. Depending on when you go, this is a perfect start to bar hopping before a Giants game. It’s only a few blocks away and there are more bars as you get closer.

Lots of great suggestions in here.

Last time we went we ate at Foreign Cinema off of Mission. Great breakfast/brunch.

We also tried a ramen place (Marufuku Ramen) in Japantown.

Every time we are in the Bay Area we go to the de Young Museum and hit up the Japanese Tea Garden. Also liked checking out the Ferry Building Marketplace when we were last there.

The Mrs. and I want to retire in the Guerneville/Russian River Valley area. Amazing part of the country.

I’m doing this exact trip in 2 weeks. Friday San Fran doing some touristy stuff Lombard, Painted Ladies, the pier. That afternoon i have a private sail setup for the girlfriend and I. We will sail under the Golden Gate Bridge and around Alcatraz. Plan on finishing the afternoon at the Giants game.

Saturday we are stopping at Muir Woods on the way to Pride Mountain and will then keep going to downtown Napa, where we’re staying.

Sunday: Schramsberg, Sterling, V. Satui and Darioush

Several seem to think so. She knows it’s not happening yet and is good with it.

Lots of great suggestions here. I live in SF and no items to debate in here. I'll add:

-Smuggler's Cove for a cool tiki bar. Get there around opening (5pm), as the line can get pretty long into the evening

-Senor Sisig food truck for lunch or a mid-day snack to split with the wife. Dammit if it isn't the best burrito I've ever had. Go to their website for their daily locations.

-Highly recommend Cellarmaker and Bare Bottle if you're into the hazy IPA craze. If you like variety, hit Blackhammer, or a beer bar such as Toronado (very famous) or City Beer Store.

ETA:
Didn't notice it til the posters below me brought it up. I do have one debate in here:

quote:

Fisherman's wharf for food.

Would highly advise against this

I would recommend against that. The only city in america that stacks up food wise to san fran is nola. And the best stuff is not at fisherman's wharf.

We often go to bix when I am there b.c it is fantastic and you can get in on short notice. But it certainly isn't the best meal I have had.

The coffee in san fran is awesome, if you like coffee.

NYC?

Agreed. We went because my wife and her friend wanted to see the wharf and the seals and all that. I hadn’t eaten all day, but we were eating at Tadich in a few hours so I got a snack of chowder at some seafood place there. It was awful. I had to get a bowl at Tadich to remember what good chowder tastes like.
