Windows 11

I see that Microsoft will no longer be updating or supporting Windows 10 later this year. I have been reluctant to upgrade to Windows 11 up till now, but guess it's time to make the switch before long. Does anyone currently have Windows 11, and if so, what are you thoughts? Is there a lot of differences between it and Windows 10? What exactly am I getting myself into if I make the change?

You can make win11 look and feel just about exactly like win10 in about 5 minutes. There is no reason not to upgrade if your PC meets the requirements.

You can upgrade to Windows 11 even if your computer does not support it.
Not required but easy to do.

We just had a long thread on this. The issue is not the initial upgrade, but the inability to do subsequent updates. At that point you are wide open to security attacks. No better off than abandoned Win10.

But I want my task bar anchored on the left edge of the screen. Not aligned left but still on the bottom. I already have a shite ton of horizontal space, stop taking my limited vertical space.

There a way to still get latest Windows 11 updates even on unsupported pc.

It is 99% the same. Move your taskbar to the left and call it a day. And yes half the planet is already on 11.

It takes about 5 sec to make that change in win11.
Go to settings/personalization/taskbar/taskbar behaviors/taskbar alignment
and then hit the dropdown menu and choose "left" instead of center.

I don’t see windows surviving much longer now that AI agents are a thing and package managers are rather excellent. Nobody needs their PDF editor taking 4GB of system resources.

That's just alignment, the task bar stays at the bottom. I mean the task bar actually being on the left edge like I was able to before. Which is how I described it originally. I'm already aligned left, because center is stupid, but that's not what I'm talking about.

Whoa, I haven't edited the registry since forever. Fun stuff! Going to try.

Damn, the registry approach doesn't work anymore, deprecated. Why, with everything including cars, computers, tools, etc., do they insist on taking away things we actually like.

You can still do it. I upgraded an old Dell Precision T3600 this morning. There are a few steps, but it's easy. If you're upgrading (not a clean install), make sure you check your current Windows installation language.

Two pieces of information are that he misses an 'S' in the registry key and you may not be able to download the ISO from Microsoft. I had to use the Media Creation Tool to generate the ISO.
