Windows 10 bitch. Its 2019 and I lost* my work yesterday.

I had an important Webex yesterday and about halfway through the meeting I pulled up notepad and starting taking notes because the meeting quickly turned to some pretty technical stuff and nobody else on the call was writing anything down.
So the meeting ended and I had to run to the bathroom.
About 15 minutes later I came back (my laptop had gone to sleep) and when I did ctrl/alt/delete to log back in, it hung on the little 'spinning wheel' (did not give me the login field). i tried 10 ways to sunday to get back into my laptop (hitting the power key, the sleep button, etc etc) and nothing worked. just the spinning wheel.
so i had to do the 10-second hold-the-power-button and kill it.
sure enough, in 2019 Microsoft doesn't think enough about NOTEPAD to have it auto-save what you're doing.
99% of the time i open a google doc or notepad++ or something but in that moment i needed something quick and hit the notepad shortcut.
frick you microsoft for not taking 10 seconds to add auto-save to a basic app that's been part of windows since 1995.
this was important stuff and it was highly embarassing that i couldn't post the notes (there was at least 30 or 35 of them) after the meeting to delegate the tasks. several c-suite execs were on the call too
*then i remembered that i had recorded the meeting and even MORE luckily, remembered i had shared my screen at one point because some of the notes were pretty long and involved and i wanted to make sure i wrote something down correctly.
sure enough, a few minutes later the webex recording showed up in my inbox and pulled it up and about 5/6 of the way through, there was my notepad on the screen. yeah i learned an important lesson but COME ON.
frick YOU MICROSOFT. you make windows buggy and shite so the least you can do is cache my active workspace and attempt to restore it after a crash.
ETA regarding my laptop..this is a 4 month old TOP OF THE LINE SURFACE PRO LAPTOP 2 with all updates & patches in place.
this is your fricking hardware microsoft.

Never have that problem with my apple

Using word/excel or any other MS office app would have taken the same amount of time to open and could have been recovered
Hell, even google docs would have taken an extra 10 seconds to open

Save your work early and often.

unfortunately google and other apps have made that almost a non-issue. its only when i use caveman tools like core windows utilities i go back into the dark ages.
EL OH EL that notepad doesn't retain what you're jotting down after a crash.
even the 15 useless browser tabs i had open in chrome all come back after a crash.

Notepad has no autosave, should have done word
try this
Go to Start.
Under search bar, key in %AppData%
Click Enter to direct to C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming.
At the right search bar, type filename of lost text and notepad file.

Use Notepad++. Much better and more versatile compared to Notepad.

Your bad for using notepad instead of onenote or word that has autosave.

it was a knee jerk reaction to realizing nobody was taking notes and it was a shortcut so i just grabbed it and started typing.
i realize it was dumb but i'm using arguably the best windows computer on the market currently running the latest version of Windows and yet this makes me feel like its 1995.
i think its pretty reasonable to expect to be able to get back into an open file you had open on your machine 15 minutes earlier whether its notepad or anything else.

'user error'

It's 2019 and notepad is your go to note taking app on Windows? Never heard of the app called OneNote which actually saves automatically....?

A laptop going to sleep is kind of a pain in the arse anyway. I've always disabled it.
Don't believe the like about Mac never doing that. I have a MBP dual booting Win10/ElCapitan and Mac has waaaaay more spinning cursor hangups than what occurs in Windows

You suck at computers
This is totally user error

I mean you used a basic program with basic features. The reason they probably don't want to add anything is because notepad++ and word exist.
This is just a lesson to "measure twice, cut once"

my bad for using a program and expecting to return to it 15 minutes later and not lose everything
"user error"
and btw, i HAVE to use notepad or wordpad on some of the remote servers i manage to edit xml, etc. because we are not allowed to download 3rd party apps like notepad++
those machines dont even have office.

Tell them "buy once, cry once"
Posted on 4/12/19 at 1:21 pm to CAD703X
It's a software feature (and no not an OS feature) and new features for notepad aren't walking through that door anytime soon.
