Windows 10 Activation Key: Buy from MS itself, or other sources?

So, I've been using the stripped-down "free" version of Windows 10 Pro on a Virtual Box installation with Mac host. Never bought the full version since Windows was an occasional need.

Now, I have new business software that requires Windows, and want to get full version. I assume an activation key is all I need to unlock the full feature set.

In the Microsoft store, this runs $199. When I Googlify this, though, I see other options from all kinds of outlets where I can get a key for ~$50.

Question: Why are these cheaper and are they suitable for what I am doing?

TIA for any help.

Check out YouTube for activation keys. Worked for me once.

If you have a valid Windows 7 license or later, you may be able to install it and do an upgrade for free. Microsoft supposedly discontinued this a long time ago, but I did it back in April to upgrade a Windows 7 Ultimate machine to 10 Pro. Found out about it in this reddit thread:

Any key thats significantly cheaper than the M$ price is greyware. Either its been used and being resold or it was not meant for the NA market (they sell software keys at a significant discount in shithole markets). Either way, they will probably work, almost certainly after having to call M$ self support. Windows and Office phones home occasionally and you may wake up one day with an unactivated copy because M$ killed the key off.

TL;DR: don't be a cheap arse

Yeah install windows 7 or later and upgrade through the media creation tool. It’s still free this way even though they won’t tell you that.

If you're running a business, just pay the $200 and deduct it as an expense.

I've had good luck buying the ms suite with windows 10 off kinguin. I realize it's greyware, but it works fine for me. One day it may not. But I doubt I'll ever have a problem.

I don't really mind the $200. I just don't understand the disparity. Who likes to leave money on the table for no specific reason?

Some schools will give away a free copy of Windows 10 if you have a .edu address. Some of these keys are resold from this method
