Does ApplePay give you "rewards points" for using it like Samsung Pay?

ApplePay is just using NFC payment, it's nothing more than that. Just Apple being Apple and making their own name for an existing technology.

ApplePay isn't well liked by stores because it makes tracking customers harder.

Apple is pretty good about keeping your data to sell you more Apple stuff instead of giving it out to other people.

I wish more places took it.

Walgreen's, Chick Fil A and the place I get my hiarcut are the only frequent places I can/use it.

Honestly the biggest benefit is the tokenization, where they take and use a throwaway credit card number instead of your real credit card number. That makes these data breaches a lot less harmful to consumers and a lot less worthwhile to hackers.

The Equifax breach is probably going to lead to everybody locking their credit, making live credit cards even more valuable. But what if there were no live credit cards to be stolen either? The identity theft/hacking economy would be hit pretty hard. They really need to start pushing Apple/Android pay for the good of everyone.

I've heard this and it's supposedly why Walmart has taken a stand against it and coerced other retail chains to do the same. But Fresh Market has my email address which comes up every time I use Apple Pay. I guess I set that up at some point because it doesn't happen at Whole Foods, but I'd happily give my email address to a store I use regularly just so I don't have to deal with paper receipts.

this sounds like the only benefit. i tried to use apple play on my phone a few times, and it only worked once. and in the single instance that it worked, it was not more convenient than using my cc

not apple pay but i use android pay often. the convenience difference is minimal but i do think the phone is more convenient than the wallet/cc.

Used it at a festival I went to a couple years back. Thought it was great. Also when I'm waiting to check out my groceries I am usually on my phone responding to text or browsing TD so it would be cool to just hold down a button and pay (but rouses doesn't accept it)

But I see what you mean. Not a gamechanger or anything. Would just be nice for certain situations.

Agreed. I can see a situation where I’m at the gym and I only have my phone on me, so it would be convenient.

If you have a chip card, Apple Pay is much faster. The US is way behind places like Canada with payment tech. I was in Calagary and everywhere pretty much had the same mobile card reader that also took NFC payments. The waiter brings the machine to the table, you scan your phone, enter tip % and it’s done.

USA already has NFC everywhere, the problem is they do not have to be turned on. So basically most places are just choosing not to use NFC because it is harder to track customers.

Went to a conference put on by a major bank recently. Part of that conference presentation was on how Apple Pay and Samsung Pay are growing in acceptance. The jest was it’s here and it’s going to get much bigger.

Note Apple Pay isn’t just at brick and mortars. I’ve used it online several times.

I rarely buy things on my phone and usually if I'm buying something online it's through amazon which has my payment info already stored. Or I use paypal.

Not entirely. They use a proprietary system that utilizes a one-time token every time you use it, making it much more secure. It doesn't broadcast card info like most other contactless payments.

They all have their own forms of security, but it is still just an NFC payment system. Nothing more and nothing less.

Understood. It's all an extra layer of security though. I think our CC got skimmed 2 weeks ago and all of a sudden we started having weird transactions in NYC and NJ (we live in New Orleans).

I've harped to my wife to just use Apple Pay going forward with her phone just as another way to prevent those shitheads from getting our info.

Do what you can, pray for the best.

Up here in NYC it is used frequently, but obviously not as popular as cash or ATM cards. Love using it on my iPhone if possible.

Samsung Pay doesn't need to grow in acceptance. It works everywhere they take credit cards.
