The people I talk to with ATT say Cox can’t compete and vice versa with the Cox people.

Which one is better for real?

better is all relative. What makes something better? Price? Performance? reliability? Best wifi performance?

Is the AT&T fiber or DSL?

Att has simple straightforward pricing on fiber with no extra fees and no data limits. They have synchronous speeds of 300Mbps, 500Mbps, 1Gbps, 2Gbps & 5Gbps. You really dont need any more than 300Mbps no matter what any ISP tells you.

If Cox can give you enough speed and data allowance at a lower price than at&t, go for it.

Speed is what I’m interested in. Just streaming 4 tvs, kids laptops, phones and tablets.

As of now, they are the same price. It doesn’t matter which company I use. Just confused because both claim to be better than the other. I know that’s their sales pitch but I don’t know enough about IT to know if there’s a difference.

I had Cox for about 8 years and I hate Cox. I moved recently to an area that has ATT fiber and I dropped Cox immediately. 500 mbps speed with fiber is $65/month and 500 mbps with Cox is $126 /month. The internet seems to be better with ATT for half the price. ATT gave me ~$450 in Visa gift cards and Blink security system for switching to them from Cox.

You only need 100Mbps for that. Fiber will probably provide slightly better uptime and better upload speeds.

Cox will probably give you better in-home wifi because you can locate the gateway anywhere there is a coax outlet in your house. At&t gateway can only be installed where they are willing to terminate fiber coming into the house. This means a lot of times the at&t gateway ends up in spots that are less than ideal that hamper the wifi performance.

Cable is subject to far more speed degredation than fiber is. Fiber is on or off. In my seven years with AT&T Fiber, it went out twice: once during a planned upgrade to my subdivision, and second when a construction crew backed heavy equipment into the equipment that supplied half my city. If there was power, it was up.

Cable, meanwhile, has shat the bed at least every two weeks for months.

AT&T Fiber is far more reliable. If you're not happy with wifi speed in a certain area of your home, any ISP will gladly sell you an extender.

AT&T fiber > Cox gigablast > anything else available in BR.

AT&T uverse/DSL SUCKS for reliability.

I have lived lots of places around town and I never got good uploads with Cox. The best day is 50mbps, but average is 25 with many days clocking 2 or 3 mbps upload. For Zoom meetings and gaming it sucks. Lots of times on the phone with Cox trying to explain that I need more upload but that’s cable. Packages are all 5x dl /1x ul

Fiber I get 500mbps down and upload. Love it.

ATT fiber all the way. Not because of speed but reliability.

AT&T has no data limit.

If you are streaming, this is a huge factor. Cox will rape you once you go over your download limit.

I've only ever heard good things about AT&T fiber. Haven't heard anyone rave about Cox fiber.

Plenty of complaints out there about at&t fiber. They have their own laundry list of issues.

Cox can't even pretend to compete with ATT Fiber. It's not close. Anyone who says otherwise either doesn't know what they are talking about or are trying to sell you something.

News to me

Just a few:
- Terrible fiber installation methods. Many areas are not including NIDs anymore to cut costs. Fiber is hand trenched but only about 2-4" deep resulting in being easily cut by simple things such as yard aerating. Fiber will pop out of ground during droughts. Many areas install fiber cable in ground w/out a tracer so there is no way to verify location before digging.
- Terrible customer service should you need it (thankfully service is pretty reliable after install)
- Forced to use the At&t gateway even if you use your own network equipment. Gateway has a low session limit.
- Installs usually dont allow the gateway to be placed in an ideal central location which would provide good whole home WiFi coverage. The BGW320 gateway is WiFi6 and has really good WiFi coverage but when installed in basements or at one end of a house, it can still struggle.
- They charge $10/mo for wifi extenders
- No option to change DNS servers on at&t gateway
- Many areas (especially places in Michigan) are getting oversubscribed so speeds and latencies struggle during peak hours. this is happening in more and more areas

This is the short list. Most of these things are not big deals to average users other than how poorly installs can be and how easily the fiber is cut.

True, i worry about a mole chewing through it. It was new construction and they basically put the fiber under the sod. Luckily it's only a 20ft run or so and it's rocky arse NWA, but i would be concerned breaking the fiber just walking in that area if it was a swampy yard.

True, and true

True, but you can put it in passive mode now and use your own system.

Eeeh, the optical transceiver is in my garage, they offered to run cat6 to whatever room i wanted the gateway in.

Don't use the gateway for DNS

It's fiber to the backbone, i don't understand what you mean by this. Sounds like a cox problem more than ATT.

Pon is still a shared Internet setup. Too many subscribers in an area overloads the system just like every other residential Internet system.

Hrm, my engineer implied that wasn't the case. Maybe he's wrong. I've never experienced any congestion and cox is so bad here i think the entire neighborhood is on fiber(400 homes or so).
