$700 will by you a nice watch that you don't have to carry your phone everywhere you go to make work.
If you strip away all the features, would you describe the Apple Watch as a "nice watch"?

Not at all. I doubt I'd pay $30.00 for it.

Well there you go...his point stands.

What he said was it wouldn't work without the phone.
Clearly it does.
ETA: just simply clarifying for those that know nothing about the watch.

Isn't it clear that what he meant was it doesn't work as designed and loses much of its value without the phone?

a 2 month wait for a pre-order in 2015 is perfectly acceptable to you because apple has 'thousands of moving parts'?
that's a pretty low pedestal.
Show me any other company that released a brand new product, not an iteration, that pumped out 1 million+ units immediately with no delays.

IMHO, no. Its like using an A-10 cannon on single shot mode. The point of buying the watch is to do all the other stuff with it, not to wear it around as a timepiece. As other posters said, there are plenty of cool features on it, all of which rely on your iPhone to work. Without it, its just a $700 digital watch that you have to charge everyday.
I own a Tom Tom multisport GPS watch. It tells time too, but I don't wear it everyday as a watch and I don't have to carry my phone with me when I run.
I'm not shitting on the tech, I think theres a place for it. But I don't think apple, android, or anyone else know what that place is yet.

not really fair comparison because apple knows they're going to sell a million+ of anything they push out..including a steaming pile of shite.
show me any other company that releases something innovative with a built in rabid fanbase?
apple knows this. they could have waited to release this after they built a little inventory.

So, it seems Apple caved to pressure and revealed a product sooner than they would have liked and released it before they had their production lined up.
word on the street is it was production issues with the small display. And this delayed release and has hurt them with catching up with demand.
BTW, I know 3 ppl with iwatches. They managed to get them.
I do not think its that big of an issue.

My biggest concern about the Apple Watch is a comment from Jonny Ive that I read in the days following the Apple Watch launch. He basically said when they decided to do the Apple Watch they did not know what problem it was going to solve or what it was going to be good at. He said as they develop the Watch they will figure it out.
That to me is a major red flag. Apple has almost always developed products only if they thought it would solve some kind of a problem for the consumers. But for the first time since their resurrection in '97, I hear them developing a product that they didn't know what it was supposed to be really doing. Maybe they are missing Steve Jobs after all.

My only concern is that by the time I get one, they're gonna be 8 months from announcing the new one

Didn't the watch have some production issues that may have altered the rollout?

They had early yield issues plus labor issues.
This just made a bad situation worse.
For what it's worth mine is humming away. And I've only noticed one minor software glitch.

how do you like the watch in general?

I'm pretty happy with it in general. Mainly because I don't feel as "tethered" to my phone all the time as far as having to check it constantly. I keep it on silent. Now whenever I get a call or a text or a notification like from WAFB I get a gentle tap on the wrist and at a glance I can check it to see who or what the message is from.
I still can't say it's a must have, but now that I have it I wouldn't want to go without.
Here's my review thread--- LINK

As if any of these Streisands would ever be without their phones...

I can't believe I'm agreeing with gman but that's exactly how I feel about my lg watch. That sums it up.

Ehhh I have my moments.

I just wouldn't sit here and tell people you have to run out and get one. But I would tell them I doubt you'll be disappointed if you do.

I ordered on release day and just got it today.
I've had it on all evening and this is a first impression review.
Its comfortable. I haven't worn a watch in years and thought it would feel weird to have one on. I don't even feel it there.
The first thing I did was turn off the raise to check function. That's a tire fire. The watch had no idea whether I was walking or reaching for something out of the fridge. All it did was turn on and off when I moved my arm and as a fully alive human, I use my arms frequently.
I simple tap turns it on and a palm over turns it off, both instantaneously when that function is turned off.
The customization options for the home screen are fantastic. Along with the watch face customization regarding UI and color, you can decide what you want to see at a glance or at one touch. The options are impressive.
My use case tonight was my daughter's soft ball game. I answered one call and did several text messages. The voice to text on the watch is somehow far superior to the iPhone. I intentionally spoke with my normal voice rather than over-pronounce every word and it nailed everything much better than my phone would have. The only phone call was met by surprise that I had the conversation on my watch.
Some of the apps that are there are kinda silly. I'll never check a weather radar on this watch but it is there. Other stuff like that sticks out. There are apps that do not and will never translate to the watch that are there.
My use case for it isn't great but I bought because I wanted it and I'm going to enjoy it.
ETA forgot to mention that familiarity with iOS does not translate to the watch. There is a learning curve.
Another ETA: Force touch is great. I cannot wait until it is built into iPhone and iPad.
