Why the Apple Watch makes me concerned about Apple.

I've never seen one with my own eyes.
I have one ordered.
I hope to see it shipped before the Apple Watch 2 reveal.
The Apple Watch thing concerns me not at all because of the product, which I am anticipating greatly and can't wait to get. It's the process I've seen that concerns me.
Apple has a tendency to ignore criticism and act immune to what people outside of Apple think they should be doing and on what timeframe. The watch seems to be an abandonment of that.
The way the Apple Watch thing has played out seems to suggest that Apple has lost some swagger and is susceptible to making mistakes due to attempting to counter outside criticisms.
The Apple Watch was revealed many months before it had any hopes of coming to market. I believe this was because Apple reacted to external pressure regarding their not shaking up the industry in the 5 years since they rolled out the iPad.
Flash forward to when they pretended to have it ready to release, it appears they had like 17 watches ready to ship. People that ordered on pre-order day are waiting 2 months. This is particularly concerning because when Tim Cook was #2 his claim to fame was keeping the trains running on time in China. He was the guru of production.
So, it seems Apple caved to pressure and revealed a product sooner than they would have liked and released it before they had their production lined up.

I agree and I'm sure android wear picking up steam was a major reason for it.

Building hype and creating demand by intentional lack of supply is pretty common. However, I read something the other day about it being a simple manpower issue. Labor shortages in China because of the Lunar New Year. Plus, there's the inherent challenges of Quanta mass-producing the first generation of a new device. No idea what their yield is.
I don't think the early reveal suggests anything other than Apple wanting people to get excited, speculate, circle jerk, and pre-order the shite out of it. The first-gen iPhone was revealed over 6 months before ship date, too, and it had basically no competition.

Lets be fair, here.
I'm an Apple guy but you'd be hard pressed to find me being an a-hole outside of occasionally taking on a person that is being a dick against people that prefer Apple products.
I'm only famous for being an Apple crusader on the Money board and that was 5 or 6 years ago when I was trying to make them rich and they laughed at me for it.

The problem I have is that the non sport version runs you well over $500 (probably avg around $700), which is almost the same price as an iPhone. That much for an iPhone accessory. It came be used on its own.
And you can only use first party watch faces.

This is my general issue. I'm sure theres a place for it, I just don't see how it would fit for me.
$700 will by you a nice watch that you don't have to carry your phone everywhere you go to make work.

Does not compute.
I actually find it fascinating how quickly Rolex and other luxury watch makers jumped all over the android watch face designers who copied their watch faces.

I mean.. Is anyone mistaking a shitty digital watch for a Rolex?
Can we 3d print 24 caret gold watch bands yet?

The watch function and several others still work without the phone. Still check your calendar, emails you've already received etc. You just can't update anything.
Not like it totally shuts down without the phone.

This is a bad argument

They revealed it when they did for the same reason they revealed the iPhone 6 months in advance. They didn't want FCC filings to out them.

a year ago the Apple watch didn't exist outside of Cupertino. Now there are over a million. Bigger ramp up than the OG iPhone or iPad. It's not easy and no other company has ever done anything like it. Compound that with a new technology (Haptic Engine) not being manufactured correctly and you have delays. They're not invincible. There are thousands of moving parts. The fact that people who were quoted delivery in June/July are already receiving there orders bodes well.

That's pretty pointless really.

The watch I wear everyday was $800 new. All it can do is tell time and date. If I had $1k to drop on a vanity item right now I would buy the Apple Watch in a heartbeat if all it did was tell time and date.

I have realistic expectations, unlike the anti-Applers that take any sign of non perfection as a sign of doom. Who is putting them on the pedestal?

Wait wait wait. He's comparing a regular watch to this watch and making it sound like the whole thing shuts down and not even the clock functions without the phone. It still does at least as much and much more than a regular watch. I'm just pointing out that's misleading.
I'm not saying it's a big selling point.

apple has been cranking out millions of consumer electronics since the ipod in what..2003? a 2 month wait for a pre-order in 2015 is perfectly acceptable to you because apple has 'thousands of moving parts'?
that's a pretty low pedestal.
