- laying cozy in bed at night; oh shite did i close the door after i finished in the yard? 'alexa close garage door'.

- schedules; my house 'goes to bed' at 10:30 every night and automatically shuts the garage doors, locks the doors, turns all the lights out, etc. peace of mind.

- you're at work and you get an alert your wife left the door open. you gonna leave it open all day or you gonna hit 'close' on your phone and go back to work?

My Garage Door closes after 1 min automatically if left open.

Mine has Wifi. It is the unit they installed when we built our house. I have it setup. Haven't used it once.

I use a cheap arse smart lock that comes with the amazon camera. It does everything I want it to.

Main things I wanted was the ability for it to be voice controlled, app controlled, and the ability to send digital keys.

My battery lasts at least a year and gives you plenty of warning before it dies. It really is a no brainer.

must be a total pita when you're working outside and needing to go in and out of your garage or you're helping bring groceries in.

I’ll second the smart locks. I finished my build in December and haven’t had to use a key. The kids can come in and out and I get a notification on my phone any time someone uses a code to get in.

Can people recommend brand names they are using. There are so many now of smart locks and everything else it will help to weed through the crap products.

thx

Smart lights are one of my favorites, I use the Wiz bulbs made by Phillips. We have them everywhere, it's cool to change dimmer while watching a movie or the colors on the front porch for the 4th or Christmas. The porch lights are also on timers, they do their own thing.

Here is what I currently have:
Lock - Schlage Connect
Outdoor cameras - Ring doorbell and spotlight cams
Garage Door opener - Linear Go Control Zwave
Indoor cameras - Arlo
Individual bulbs - Sengled (though I might move those to other rooms and upgrade living area to Hue)
Wall switch - GE Zwave switch (for patio lights)
Thermostat - Honeywell wifi

Everything is paired with Smartthings

my man

i have most of this but i use hubitat instead of smartthings but it seems the custom devices written for ST are easily ported in github to hubitat. i'm using 3 apps written for ST in hubitat to control some old quirky devices and they work fantastic.

2 Honeywell T5 wifi thermostats
2 schlage zwave locks
2 linear garage door openers which i recently enabled alexa voice control with
a zillion zwave devices
ring floodlights

About to replace some recessed can light bulbs in my 2 story tall vaulted living room, so I'd like to get it right the first time and hopefully never do it again lol.

Anything I should look for other than just some run of the mill LED bulbs? Any other options that are better?

do them all at once b/c these things change so often you may end up with lights that dont match.

i recommend going with a bulb/enclosure that can change white levels (3000 to 6500k) because you never know when you want a brighter/white vs soft white, the ability to dim and color changing as well.

the color changing feature isn't as important as tunable white levels but generally you get both.

i've seen these all over amazon for less than $30/light so its worth it. you wouldn't want to swap all your lights then decide you hate the light they put out.

hue is the best b/c of their hub & software; but these things are as cheap as $10/can if you buy an off brand. with amazon you can always return them if they suck.

lots of choices here

i want to add recessed lighting to my kitchen. I just moved and this house has a big center fixture with florescent tubes. What would you use if you has to start from scratch? wiring it isnt a big deal i i can get power there.

i dont think so. at least i didn't. these are facade 'all-in-ones' that simply replace the trim only.

unscrew the old lightbulb, pull the trim down and you just have a bulb socket in the can.

take the new fitting, screw the little cable/bulb base into the existing socket and push the new trim up until it snaps into place. something like this below:

ps determine if you want ribbed or flat sides

simple, elegant and looks way better than bare bulbs with empty space around them.

my wife and i went into a $1.2mil model home a few weeks ago and i walked around downstairs amazed shaking my head at all the random CFL, old school incadescent and occassional SUPERWHITE LED bulb in the cans each putting out a different color of white.

how do house stagers not notice this?

eta i know i'm ocd but when i see something like this in a high end home it makes me irrationally angry
