What is special about Microsoft Surface?

They seem to be priced at a premium just like the Mac computers that Apple sells. I’m just trying to figure out what’s special about them and why they command such a high price compared to most other laptops that run Windows.
What is the advantage of Surface?

One thing special is how you can overpay for a magnetic charger + dock for a tablet that runs full Windows.

It just feels more high end than cheaper alternatives. I'm always buying cheap computers to use but my wife has a surface she got from work a few years ago and it has held up better than anything I have ever seen and has been flawless.

Are we talking about Surface Pros or actual Surface Laptops? Very different price to performance analysis.

I have the surface laptop work issued and threw the pen in the drawer the first day and haven't seen it since.
The tablet is permanently fused to the base no so it won't undock.
Performance is mediocre.
That's about all I got. I'm ready for a new laptop.

I got a Lenovo one with a permanent keyboard that rotates around and can be used as a tablet. It was a third of the price of the surface.

Its not about "just running windows" people do all kinds of things on computers. More abstractly there are a lot of reasons why one thing that seems similar to another is more expensive. some reasons are tangible, like better hardware, materials, screens, warranty, etc. There are also intangibles like marketing, style, aesthetics and perceived superiority. You should fairly easily be able to pull up whichever surface you are talking about and whichever other "most other laptops that run windows" you are talking about and see why the surface might be priced higher than the other. IMO there is a distinct difference in quality between most $1k+ laptops and $500 laptops with diminishing returns as you climb higher than $1.5k for most users.

The Microsoft Surface laptops are of higher build quality, with amazing touch pads and keyboards....and good screens. Now, are they worth the premium price? Eh..
There are usually other premium offers with similar/better specs for less, especially if you catch a sale. My ASUS ZenBook offers premium build quality and better specs, with an inferior touchpad, for less. I switched over from a series of Surface Books.
*ETA: I'm talking laptops. I can't comment on their tablet options.

I like my surface pro but i work pays for it. It seems to be very sturdy and well built. I did have an issue with my SP4 where the screen separated from the body (possibly due to heat) but it worked fine. Ended up getting a new one then left that company and asked for one at the new company and was given one. Light, thin, easy to travel with, easy to dock. After 8-10 years of using surface pro's i'll never go back to a traditional laptop. note: i only use it with the keyboard attached, don't really use it as a tablet.

This. I shopped them in person and don't regret my decision. I use the touch screen all the time (with my finger)

I was given a SP9 without a keyboard, and I'm considering dropping th $200 on the keyboard and pen bc I use it some damn much
