WAN Backup Options

I'm considering adding a second internet connection to configure as a failover option on my Ubiquiti gear. I know Cox used to offer a really cheap monthly option, but now it appears limited to poor people or veterans.
I'd like a cheap option. My ATT Fiber has actually never gone down, but I work from home and wouldn't mind a backup. Any recommendations?

have you considered doing starlink or something along those lines? it could be a good solution for travel and you can set it up at home to be a backup..not sure if there are tiers where you pay by data use but if so that might be a good solution as you wouldn't be paying full price unless you had to fail-over to it.

Yeah, I used to go all over the place, but that changed a long time ago.

I've considered it, but I just can't justify the cost. Like I said, ATT has been ultra reliable for me. I just want a cheap backup option, like that $30 Cox cable option. Cell phones work fine while travelling, so that isn't important to me.

what about google fi? its been a minute since i checked into it but i know there was a 'only pay for what you use' option which may do what you're wanting..but i dont think its going to get you where you need if you're used to fiber speed.
i like your thinking though; my fiber has gone down multiple times (the line keeps having limbs and crap fall on it) and i have to wait for them to come string it back up. i dont know why they refuse to just bury that run. its only about 40' and probably would have already paid for itself in the number of times they've been back out to the house restringing it.

I have 1 gig up and down, but I wouldn't need that in a backup situation. 50-100 Mb would be just fine. I'll check out Google. Thanks.
I also looked at Starlink. It's gotten cheaper. There's a $55 monthly option. I really don't want anything mounted to my house though.
This might be the best option for the least amount of hardware. I'd just have to add a line to my phone plan, I think.

I've been considering Mint 5G home internet as a backup option. Pay for a year up front and it comes out to $30/month

Does their device have an ethernet port that I could connect to existing equipment? I can't tell from their website.

Yes, there are 2 ethernet ports on the device

Who is your cell plan through?
T-Mobile gives you a $15 discount on their mobile broadband if you have a voice line. Works out to $35/mo.

ATT. Cell backup scares me because reception in my house isn’t amazing. I’d have to mount something outside or maybe near a window.

If you are looking to protect a home office or a small business, a 5G cellular gateway configured via an SD-WAN or Active/Passive firewall is the gold standard. It gives you the best defense against a physical line break while keeping ongoing monthly standby costs relatively low.

You'd have to mount something for starlink too. Running cable for a 5G antenna is stupid simple.
I think just for the price and use case, it's hard to pass up mint
